It had been quite some time since, Steven had originally brought up the idea of getting a job with his cousin, the argument that had caused an accident followed by a fight, with the biker Austin. However Steven eventually had raised the point once again to his cousin. Telling him he had found a perfect place to work, somewhere he could happily spend time even behind a counter. His cousin had relented in the end agreeing that Steven could at least try and get the job. Steven did so and in the end did. Today was his first day.
'The Java Cafe' was a cross between a internet cafe, a normal cafe and a library al rolled into one. It served basic food, coffee and other drinks. While a row of 10 computers lined one wall, the other side of the room filled with more comfortable leather chairs and low coffee tables. Bookcases lined the other wall. The owner own collection of books. Stories and works of all kind, and quite a few Steven had never seen before, let alone read.
It was perfect, he could work his shift and on his breaks get food, a mug of tea and read. There was not much better then that in Steven mind for a job. However that meant getting through the first half of his shift. Steven stood behind the counter in the cream and black uniform that he had been provided. A baseball cap on his head, was some annoyance. The symbol of the cafe on the front. A knock off version of the symbol for the Java computer program, surrounded by coffee beans. A joke on the fact that the place provided Java of both kinds.

There where worse thing that Steven could be doing with his time, however he was starting to feel that their were many better things he could be doing. Customer and customer asked for coffee, espresso, lattes and all manner of different names for different types of coffee. Half of them used terms in a confused manner, while other were straight up asking for something that wasn't what they wanted. It was really infuriating. Steven would try to inform them. With word along the lines of 'You mean (the type of drink here).' However it didn't seem to go down well.
Eventually he gave up, and put to memory the incorrect names people where using for things. Instead of trying to expand there knowledge which they seemed so pressed to not do. Steven would instead expand his own. Figuring out from in correct order after order what the wrong names people use for things meant without them having to describe them. While ideally wondering why exactly so many incorrectly used terms had enter into coffee shops.
It could have been worse his mind eventually reached again. The other people on staff today were to girls slightly older then him. Pretty to look at. He smile at them a few times. They returning them. Eventually one of them would approach him.
"Don't stop setting them straight. Makes it easier for other new hires."
Steven would nod and smile at her once more, and she would return it. Playfully poking him in the ribs to put him back to work.

A rare and unusual site lingered around the streets of the city at this time. Although everything just seemed quite typical and normal it was quite an unusual day indeed. A, usual, narcoleptic student from PHS quietly but swiftly walked the pavements in a brisk fashion with hands in his pockets and a messenger bag at his side. It was rare for Shouyo to be walking around so normally during this time of the day, or any day really, but recently he's heard of a cafe that quite got his attention. I seemed like it had everything essentially necessary a quiet time to himself. A small coffee shop, internet, and a library all jumbled into one. Who could have asked for more?
Nearing the cafe Shouyo was about to knock at the door but then realize this was a place of business and slowly peaked his head in. It seemed to be open, and quite nice. Though it did have it's fair share of people in there. The young student walked in and headed straight for the books. An interesting collection indeed. A lot better then the one at school. Well of course he expected it to be. Why have a good library in a school of kids who would just throw it at each other? Shouyo grabbed one with the auther 'Murakami'. One of his favorites and looked around for an employee. He wondered if he could just pick it up and read it while having some coffee.
This place was obviously a very new environment and system so Shouyo was quite puzzles as to what he should do. He looked at the other patrons and took note of their behavior. It seemed that it was okay, I mean it was there for a reason. Shouyo grabbed a seat in the far corner away from most customers. But then realized.
"Ah. I wonder where I order coffee."

Steven would continue to be behind the counter, serving coffee and correcting customer. Taking there money and placing it in the till. For here he wouldn't have seen Shouyo entrance, however. The line he was serving would come to an end. One of the girls. The other one of the two working with him today would approach him. With a grin she would practically push him out from behind the counter.
"Clean up the place, long locks."
She would order, sliding a tray over the counter towards him. Obviously this one was the more forceful of the pair. Steven would grab the tray and the cloth and cleaning spray that was on it and go around and clean some of the tables. Left over mugs and cups put on the tray to carry around. As he did so, he would pass a table in the corner area of the store. Over hearing them talking to themselves.
"Just at the counter over there."
Steven would turn and tell the customer, pointing with the now dirty cloth in his hand.

Shouyo stared at the book and out at the cafe still wondering where to go. Should he even get a drink? Well it would be rude to just come in and sit down to read and buy nothing. That would be an abuse to such a facility. But in the midst of his thoughts a voice rang through his ears that startled him for a second. Ah but it was none other then a employee of the cafe. Although Shouyo was relieved his question was answered he was slightly fumbled that the man noticed Shouyo talking to himself.
"Oh um... thank you..."
Getting up the book remained within Shouyo's hands like a ancient treasure. Just as he was about to take a step Shouyo took note of the rag and made a sort of disgusted face at it. Not to be rude or grossed out but the thing really needed a good rinse under a sink. Although it may not seem like it the bed haired boy was one for cleanliness. Unless it was one of his "work weeks" where everything was a mess.
"You shoul....d really... wash th-"
Seeing as how such a thing could seem rude and in proper terms "not his place" Shouyo quickly stopped talking and walked towards the counter without another word or look. As if he just lost focus on whatever he was doing and moved on to the next part of his life.
"Could I get a hot french vanilla coffee. Milk with 3 sugars."

Steven would leave the exchange at that, noticing the other kids trying to say something but not what. As Shouyo would go to the counter, Steven would head back as well, dropping rubbish in the bin and mug and glasses in the dishwasher. Before he would indeed clean the cloth in the sink. "Certainly."
The more hothead one of the coffee girls would awnser Shouyo's order. "Ponytail, can yo--" "I heard." Steven would cut the girl off from asking, dropping the cloth and cleaning his hands off before drying them in order to get the drink. The coffee machine were annoying and slightly awkward to use, but he managed to make the drink in short order. Bringing the mug over on a small plate like saucer and putting it on the counter next to the girl. "That's $3.25, any thing else?"The girl would say, putting the drink on a tray and asking. If not she would take the money and put it away in till returning any change.

Shouyo glanced a few times as the waiter that helped him locate the counter would follow shortly behind him back to the counter. Maybe he did hear what Shouyo said or predicted what he was going to say. This made him feel slightly embarrassed but Shouyo quickly forgot about it, the sooner it is away from his memory, the better. Before long the coffee was right up at the counter. And he laughed slightly under his breathe thinking how this girl ordered the already busy employee to fix up his coffee. Prediciting ordering anything else might cause more work for the young man Shouyo grabbed loose crumbled three dollars from his wallet.
"Ah sorry..."
He quickly fixed the dollars in a orderly neat pile, though they still had many wrinkles upon them. But then he realized he was still short a little. Carrying an extra 75 cents seemed like a lot of trouble, just jangling in his pocket. Making noise catching people's attention. So the steeply student dug through his pockets searching for the treasure and at last, the holy grail.
"Here you go. 3.25."
Shouyo grabbed the coffee and with the book at his hand made his way over back to the corner table.

Steven would smile as the kid, searched for the money to pay and would look down at the book that he had chosen from the stores collection. He knew of the author but never had read any of his stuff. Seriously though 'Murakami' that was an odd surprise. Steven really had to search the selves better at some point.
Steven would return to the skin finish off cleaning the cloth properly. Wring it out as best as possible and return it to its' hook. Before drying his hands off once more. Steven would clean up a little behind the counter as Shouyo would go about enjoying his book. Sarah, the meek, and Marie the brash. Both teasing as he ignored there joking as they worked, instead focusing on his own work.
However Marie would not take kindly to being ignored, and would chase him from behind the counter once more. Upset. Steven didn't know what to do, and would run. He had always like his women assertive but there was just crazy. However it would be due to the uniform, clothes he was unused to that Steven would miss a step, and up knocking down books flying off a selves of one of the bookcases.

Shouyo returned to the corner seat and settled the coffee down onto the table in front of him. Gentle, like holding a baby, they settled the cup down without making a sound. Sitting back he really got comfortable with the atmosphere and seat. First he took a sip of the coffee. Truly letting the flavor soak into his taste buds. After settling the cup back down Shouyo put on his earphones and played Clair de Lune and flipped opened to the first page of the book.
It couldn't be a more perfect moment. A comfortable seat, a quiet relaxing atmosphere, a good book, a warm drink, and a classic tune. Nothing could ruin this moment Shouyo thought. Who would come in to bring trouble in this little java cafe? No thugs, no delinquent students. It was utter bliss, but knowing Shouyo's luck, it didn't last long. Even through the music Shouyo could hear something crashing down. Not only that one of the books came flying at him.
Shouyo quickly turned around and realized it was the waiter that helped him, and made him his coffee that ran into a little accident. It would be fine for Shouyo to just turn back around, sit down and continued reading but he realized something. This poor guy bullied by his fellow employees and now falling on a bookshelf. What luck. Shouyo stood and walked over to the man grabbing a few fallen books along the way and bent over to him.
"Um.... are you okay? I think the books are fine."

Steven would groan, not because he had fallen. No because he looked like a idiot, he was normally much more coordinated then this. Now of all things he had one of the customers asking if he was okay and helping him by picking up a few of the books.
"Yeah thanks."
Steven said pushing himself up to his feet pulling one of the books that he had managed to clasp in his hand as he fell up with him. He would turn and see that the guy had picked up some of the books and would smile.
"Sorry I'll I'll deal with those."
He said holding out the book he had so that Shouyo could put those he had picked up on top of it.
"Thanks again."
Steven would say and go to pick up the rest of the books and put them back on the shelf neatly. This wasn't as easy as he had hoped it would be. Maybe the other members of staff would warm up to him.
"What a great first day."
Steven muttered to himself sarcastically.

"No problem."
Shouyo took the books and handed them back to the employee, sort of hesitant since he could have just put them back himself, lift some of the load of his shoulders. He seemed to be having a rough day after all. He seemed to be getting everything back in place like he should so Shouyo thought to walk back and not stare at him as he cleaned the place back up. Except that they both missed a book that still laid on the ground. Shouyo picked it up and walked back to the employee and handed it to him.
"Here. Missed this one."
The sentences he spoke were short. To the point. Before handing the lost book back to the one who could return it to its rightful place Shouyo couldn't help but overhear the mans muttering. Maybe it wasn't his place to ask or say anything but unconsciously shouyo stuttered out a comment.
"First day of work is always tough. But the coffee you made was great."
Although Shouyo didn't mention anything insulting or rude he would immediately regret opening his mouth. His goal was to stay invisible after all. Why did he make that extra comment he would wonder when he could have just handed the stray book to him and walked away?

Steven would turn and take the book as Shouyo spoke and slide it back onto the shelf with all of the others. Steven didn't even pay attention to what the book was. Right now it didn't matter, this task had given him a brief reprieve from heading back to the counter and being teased by the coffee girls, Marie in particular.
However Steven hearing the second from the guy would turn and face him. Steven would give an almost bow of a nod. Seeing an opportunity. To try and put off going back to the counter for that little bit longer.
"Thank you, but I'll managed."
Steven would first reply directly to Shouyo comment, before he would use the words as a distraction, using his polite and considerate voice.
"Everything else okay, the collection meet you approval."
Steven would wave at the bookshelves.
"Well when they are not falling on you I mean."
Steven would add with a smile, an time wasting attempt at humour. Hopefully the longer he left Marie to calm, the more work he could get done when actually behind the counter.

The young employee responded back with somewhat emotion. Shouyo couldn't really tell whether it was just obligated courtesy as an employee or just buying time to get out of work. Either way the conversation has begun, it'd be rude to just walk away at this point. The book that just was place back was actually one shelf above where it should be. Or else Shouyo guessed since most books were organized by the authors last name. As he continued to listen Shouyo mindlessly and without thought grabbed the book and placed it with all the authors other works. He didn't really care about the other books and where they were placed but this happened to be one of his other favorites.
"Oh... sorry.."
He commented as the hand retracted back to his body. It really wasn't his place after all to do someone job. Or mindlessly insult them at their efforts on doing it. Shouyo wanted to laugh at his tasteless joke but it was just so bad, plus he was alreadly bad at faking smiles and such so he pulled a half a**ed one. A shaking side smirk at the man and let out a noise.
"heh... right..."
Shouyo took a step backa nd adjusted his glasses that rested on his face, and before long just put his hands in his pockets to avoid fidgeting them around.
"It must be fun, surrounded by books and coffee..."

As he spoke, Steven would notice the guy quickly correct where he had put the book. If it had been Steven's own collection he would never had made such a mistake, as he knew where every book was meant to go by instinct. However the job wasn't as good as Steven had been hoping.
"I rather have some tea or water and bury myself in my own collection."
Steven would reply, still searching for words in order to waste time. However as he did so, Steven would glance over his shoulder in order to make sure he wasn't desperately required in order to work. Lucky for him he wasn't.
"Mostly did it, so I didn't have to rely on fam as much."
By family he meant his cousin. James White. Great man, if only he had more time to actaully stay around. Because life without the family, except those friends that were like one. Well... it sometimes sucked.
"How about you? Like the place I guess then?
Steven would ask.

A glass of water was sort of a odd drink to have when relaxing with a book. Not that water was an odd source of liquid. I mean everyone's got their tastes. But really usually one would pick something less.... bland when enjoying a good read and such. Maybe he just didn't have a taste for flavored drinks. He did know someone who refused to drink soda. Health reasons and such. But it all seemed a little dumb considering that person also drank coffee every morning. Not the best diet in the world per say.
"True. But Im not very motivated at home. At home I kind of just... fall asleep... since the bed is conveniently available."
Still holding onto the book Shouyo first grabbed on his entrance to the cafe he looked at the cover then at the book shelves the employee was still cleaning at. Shouyo walked closer to the books and observed the collection a bit further while still in conversation.
"Ah... paying your own bills and stuff huh... I guess its better no more debts to them, or obligations."
Shouyo had a tint of regret in his eyes. After getting into PHS its as if his whole family wanted nothing to do with him. His mother and brothers of course still had some contact with him here and there. But still. It wasn't the same after getting caught. Shouyo immediately snapped back into conversation though.
"Huh? Oh yeah. I'm not focused at home. Plus everywhere else has a poor collection of books or trouble lurking about."
