It was a warm afternoon with clear skies and a cool breeze. On a roof in the city, the Asian student of highschool 552 stood, feet shoulder width apart as he took deep breaths, holding each one for a few seconds before slowly exhaling, his eyes closed. Levi searched within himself, searching for the burning feeling of power that he had felt once before. The first time, it had been nothing more than a general warmness throughout his body that faded quickly and left him wanting more, but this time, as he focused, it was more of a warm ball of something sitting around his navel. His brow furrowed as he visualized the energy spreading to each of his limbs and his head, then expanding, filing his whole body. His visualization became reality as his body glowed and he reveled in his success, it was surprising how quickly he had achieved success, but he had only scratched the surface and he knew it.
I wonder if this has always been there, and if not, when did I become blessed with such a dormant gift?
Qi obviously had it's applications to combat, but the ability to alter and manipulate the very thing people rely on to see was a very useful tool, both in and out of combat. He opened his eyes, admiring the glow he was now emitting and reveling in his success as he began to alter his image, bending the light to the left and then the right, increasing the frequency. As he did this, his form became a blur and changed colors at his will as he decided to push himself further, his lust to learn more about his power driving him on.
Now....to take it further....
Levi's brow furrowed as his physical appearance began to change into people he knew, other creatures. Before Levi could continue this exercise further, his concentration broke completely, his glow faded and his heart raced...something was wrong. He didn't know why exactly, but his senses seemed to disappear as every Qi except one seemed to fade....Levi's eyes shot wide open as his head snapped to the left, his gaze looking towards his home over the horizon.
NO!!!
The Asian took off at breakneck speeds, leaping from roof to roof, racing towards his house at breakneck speeds. He could feel his brother's Qi better than most only one other coming remotely close. His senses always told him when Kido was asleep or awake, and he usually had a general idea of his brother's emotional state. Right now, his senses were telling him one thing: fear. Levi's brother Kido was reckless and curious, but he was also fearless. Levi was always telling him that he was bound to find more trouble than he could handle, but he secretly felt that it would likely never come to pass. Kido was a good kid; Levi would not even begin to know how to handle the loss of his brother.
No...I will not allow anything to happen! Hang on Kido!!
Levi quickly reached his residence as he stopped to take the image in. The front door was kicked in and a few Japanese men in black suits were sprawled out on the porch and front lawn. This was the one thing Levi could never fully get out of his mind and the thing that kept him up for a least an hour every night: The Yakuza finally finding them while he was gone and taking his family from him. He quickly ran through his front yard, his heart racing faster as he ran past the broken door and stopping abruptly as his brother ran towards him, terror on his face and blood running down the left side of his face.
“Kazanaki! Kazanaki!”
Levi would step aside and let his brother run past before scanning the living room before moving on to the dining room and the rest of the house. AS he reached the hallway to the bedrooms, Levi stopped cold as he blocked the passage, hearing several pairs of foot steps running through the house. He could not hear any yelling or fighting, so it was his dearest hope that his mother and grandfather were simply away. Levi's heart beat in his ears as he waited for the assailants Kido was presumably running from revealed themselves. Only moments passed before three Japanese men in familiar black suits rounded the corner. This confirmed it, they had finally come, but for who? And why? Levi's brow furrowed as his hands rested, ready, at his sides.
"Stop! Leave now and you can leave unhurt!
The men stared for a moment, clearly surprised to have just now seen him, befroe they charged, forced into single file by the hallway. Levi send a swift palm to the forward assailant's nost, releasing a loud snap as the bone broken and the man fell with a agonized yell. Levi backpedaled out of the house as the remaining two chased more cautiously after seeing their companion dispatched so easily. The next one charged as they got outside, Levi stepping backwards as he drew his knife, grabbing an incoming fist and filleting the man's arm, blood covering the ground as the man screamed and fell clutching his forearm. One thought stood out though: Kido had mentioned Kanzanaki, one of Levi's father's lead men as they were growing up. If he was indeed here, why had Levi not seen him? Levi looked to the other man who paused at the sight of their mutilated comrade, speaking calmly, his heart still pounding...his mind focused on killing the men who would dare threaten his family.
“Naze anata wa kore o yatte iru ka? Kazanaki wa dokodesu ka?!”<Why are you doing this? Where is Kazanki?!>
The man answered with a yell as he drew his own knife and ran towards Levi. Levi shook his head as stepped to the right to the outside of the man's arm and struck upwards with his blade, slicing the man's thumb off and causing him to drop his knife Levi would catch the falling knife as he launched a fierce, high kick into the thumbless man's jaw, sending him skyward and cracking his teeth. AS the man flew upwards, a bloody faced man ran towards Levi in a bum rush, enraged over the broken nose Levi had given him. The man quickly met his demise as Levi threw his partner's knife through his eye, blood running down his face as he tripped and slumped to the ground. The sound of slow, gloved applause echoed out of the house as a tall, Japanese man in a black business suit stepped out, a smug look on his face. His smug grin, squinty eyes and gloved hands mocking Levi as if he were the superior. Levi's anger spiked as he lowered his head, staring up at Kazanaki with a cold stare as he spoke.
“Watashi wa anata ni koko ni kuru Kazanaki suru junjo o ataenakatta! Naze anata wa watashi no ani o kôgeki shita nodeshou ka? Anata wa, kore ga anata no inochi o ushinau koto mo shitte imasu ka?!” <I gave you no order to come here Kazanaki! Why did you attack my brother? Do you know this will cost you your life?!>
The tall man laughed as he drew his knife and rushed Levi. The man was incredibly fast and became a blur, giving Levi little chance to react as he felt the sting of a blade cutting into his side. Levi had reacted purely on reflex and was lucky he had managed to move enough to have the blade merely graze his ribs. The man grabbed Levi by the throat and squeezed as he put his mouth next to Levi's ear speaking in an angered growl.
“Don't you know we're in America? They speak English here still...right? It doesn't matter...I'm taking over this operation, the world is different now...chains of command...all useless...I'll prove that to you and your dead father once I finish up here.”
The tall man lifted Levi by his neck as Levi grabbed his arm and pulled to try to relieve some of the pressure. Levi suddenly felt Kazanaki's palm smash into his nose, breaking it instantly as pain blossomed from the impact site and sending blood flying into the air. He was sent flaying into his yard, his head smacking the soft, grass covered ground. As he fought to regain his senses, he watched as Kazanaki stepped over and walked past him towards his brother who looked ready to defend himself.
Levi's head reeled as he struggled to get back to his feet as he watched Kazanaki assault his brother, drawing blood with strike and every stroke of his knife. this was far more than he could bear. Levi's Qi burned within him, almost painfully, as he found himself standing, bent over, the wound on his side staining his shirt and making every breath painful. As the assassin closed in for the kill Levi felt his insides screaming for the man to stop. Levi's voice echoed throughout the neighborhood which seemed oddly deserted for an afternoon like this.
“NO! Stop!.....ugh.....I won't let you! I'LL FUCKING KILL YOU!!!”
The tall assassin turned his head, a wry smile on his face. As the man opened his mouth to speak, that's when Levi made his move, he charged Kazanaki with everything he had as he released a bright flash of light, the tall man screaming and clutching his eyes.
"AAHHHH!!! WHAT THE HELL?!?!?"
Levi's vision began to blur as he moved to finish the man in one swift motion, plunging his knife into Kanzanaki's gut, bending him over as Levi turned the blade upwards, pulling it out and stabbing again, driving his knife through his foe's throat, red warmth running down Levi's hand and forearm dripping onto the ground, painting it crimson. Levi's side quickly hurt again as he relaxed a little too fast, his breath suddenly running away from him and he fell to his knees, clutching his side. Levi sat back shaking his head at his brother who had been lucky that Kanzanaki did not kill his targets quickly and had only managed to deal superficial, but painful, wounds.
“You know, you're going to hate your training for putting me through this.”
Levi began to feel woozy once more as he took deep breaths, choosing to bask in the light, his wounds slowly healing, and his thoughts turning solemn as the fact that his brother was the only person he could call family ran through his mind as his brother joined him on the grass.
I wonder if this has always been there, and if not, when did I become blessed with such a dormant gift?
