Though he'd never been to New York City, let alone the state, Kenji knew enough from reading online that this was not an easy city to get around in. To improve the quality of his stay, he knew that he had to map out as much of the city as he could, learn shortcuts and traffic tendencies. Thus, we come to the close of his third day of surveying NYC. The night was relatively peaceful, if you don't count the honking of cars, and booming music emanating from nightclubs and bars.
As he passed an alley, Kenji heard a wet smack, prompting him to pause. He stepped out of the way of anyone potentially behind him and took a look down the alley. Further down was a sight that was hardly uncommon in this town, from what he understood: a thuggish man wielding a pistol, threatening a young man for his money or else under the cover of night and the sounds of the city. Kenji knew that he had no rights to do anything about the situation, and that stopping one mugger would hardly change how things worked in New York. Even if it was, the man had a gun, presumably loaded. Logically, he should've turned around and kept going.
Quietly, Kenji slinked into the alley and creeped along, listening to the exchange between thug and victim.
"You wanna 'nother? Or maybe you wanna bullet in the gut? Is that what's up?"
"N-no, no! Just let me get in my bag--"
"Yeah, that's right, get that money! And move it already!"
Along the way, Kenji carefully picked up a length of pipe, then timely ducked behind a dumpster as he heard the mugger exclaim and look over his shoulder, only to see nothing but the street behind him. Confident that they were still alone, the thug returned to his victim. Kenji resumed his advance, rounding the dumpster and closing on his intended target.
"Move a little faster, wouldja?! I don't have all night!"
The click of the pistol's hammer being drawn back rang in Kenji's ears. Time was short, and fortunately, so too was the distance remaining. He took one long step ahead, then lunged with an overhead strike of his measured steel. The mugger belted out a curt expletive and discharged his nine past his victim's head, doubling over and clutching his own skull before trying to turn and see who his assailant was. Kenji acted quickly, knowing full well that one late or wrong move could result in a bullet to his head; he'd already drawn back his pipe after the initial impact, and swung a second time for the side of the thug's knee, forcing it in a direction it shouldn't naturally be able to achieve. Another yelp came as the man was brought to a knee, then gritted his teeth as Kenji smashed the pipe into his gun-wielding wrist twice, forcing him to drop it.
"Having the element of surprise is important in a takedown, you know," commented Kenji as he stepped around to the front of the thug, who was in a bit much pain to be reacting. By this point, his intended victim had scampered deeper into the alley, getting to safety, so it was just the two of them. The mugger finally put aside his pain long enough to lash out at Kenji, only for the easterner to timely step back and golf swing his extended fist, right into the knuckles. That hurt. Kenji finally discarded his steel and stepped back, patiently waiting for the thug to rise. He managed to do so, stifling the pain in his knee long enough to lunge and throw a punch with his good hand. This was the moment Kenji had been counting on; he was above striking a helpless opponent, but now that he was on his feet and hostile again, there was nothing to stop him.
Kenji hastily ducked below the man's arm and shoulder tackled him at close range, using his momentum against him. He followed through and rammed him into the dumpster from before, winding him. Sprawling against the back of it and cursing with what oxygen he had, the would-be robber was at Kenji's mercy, who took the time for another lecture as he stood tall. "I'll let you go with this much if you do the right thing and quit mugging people. Sound like a fair deal to you?" His response was a breathless but pissed "Fuck you, kid!" Unsurprising, but the easterner liked to give people like this one chance to reconsider. But, seeing as he'd turned the opportunity down...
The thug tried to step away and lift his fist, expressing hostile intent, but Kenji shut that idea down with a harsh boot to the stomach, once more depriving him of air. Then, stomping his foot back down, he stepped in and laid into the man's face with one, two, three, four rapid punches, primarily focusing on his nose. After the fourth, he threw a heavy fifth, colliding with the thug's abused nose and breaking it with a potent crack, his target's nostrils practically detonating with blood all over his knuckles. This time, the mugger had no words; the shock coupled with the earlier abuse had rendered him unconscious as he slumped down against the base of the dumpster. Kenji shook his now-open hand a bit, chuckling. "Man, he has a hard head. Not as hard of a nose, though..." He took no pride in what he did, but hoped that the thug would reconsider such actions in the future. If not, well... He tried.
Picking up the nearby gun, Kenji removed the magazine and fingered out the bullets one by one, pitching them in every which direction. As for the empty magazine and gun, he threw them onto separate fire escapes up above. As he looked back down from his throws, he noticed a perfectly good water bottle, sealed and all. Looking at it first, then his bloody fist, he shrugged and sweeped it up as he made for the mouth of the alley, using the water to clean his hands up.

"I'm following him."
- A hooded figure was following a suspicious man while hidden on the rooftops. The top half of his face masked and bow in hand, he was making sure he was out of sight. Valo was patrolling the city at night once more, while Sarah sat back at his home and provided him feedback and intel over his earpiece.
"Don't lose him. He could be our guy."
- He wasn't planning on it. Valo was tracking down a particular gang who had many accounts of human trafficking, drugs, and murder under their belts. He wasn't sure if this man was a part of them, but he was going to find out.
- He saw the man enter an alleyway, and curiously, Valo stopped and crouched, moving low among the rooftops as he tried to get a good view of what was going on. It looked like someone was being attacked down there, by the man Valo was following. He quickly dropped down to the fire escape and was about to go down before he saw someone else swoop in and save the day. The man was defeated quickly, and his gun was soon tossed away, landing on the fire escape next to Valo.
"Hmph... I guess not everyone in this city is afraid to fight back."
- He would call out with his voice deepened by the modulator attached to his chest as he jumped down to the ground level. Looking down at the bloodied body, he would check the wrists of the man that was beaten into unconsciousness, looking for a spade tattoo... only to find none.
Damn... this isn't the guy either.
- He got up and sighed, having wasted his time tailing this man. He looked at the man who took him down, noting that he didn't particularly stand out in terms of looks, but he had showcased a certain type of heroics tonight that very few possessed. Valo held his bow over his shoulder as to not appear threatening to this man in the slightest... hopefully.
"Good job. You saved that man's life tonight."

"Hmph... I guess not everyone in this city is afraid to fight back."
Kenji paused in his walk toward the alley mouth, turning around to see a half-masked man land in the alley before investigating the thug he'd trounced. The best way that he could describe this newcomer was a vigilante right out of a comic book, or even manga. Apparently not satisfied with whatever he was looking for, the man had turned and addressed him properly while toting a bow across his shoulder, "Good job. You saved that man's life tonight." And now the superhero was congratulating him. How queer.
"Well, uh... Thanks. It's not every day that a masked man says I did something right," he chuckled at the end. Thinking for a way to keep this from becoming awkward, he decided to make an observation. "Did I beat up your guy or something? It looked like you were checking him over."

- Valo looked back at the unconscious man as he was asked a question. It was rare he even spoke to anyone while under this guise, as he usually just did his job and sped off. But his job was done for him, and he wanted to be sure there were allies he could find in this city. Even one person was enough to know that this city wasn't doomed.
"I had been searching for members of a certain gang in these parts. Worst kinds of scum."
- Just thinking about what they've done was enough to infuriate him. He couldn't believe anyone could stoop so low as to put a human being through such agony.
"But this guy was a false lead. I was going to take him out regardless, but you did it for me. Still..."
- He looked at the bloodied man on the floor.
"You want to be careful. Piss off the wrong people, and you'll end up like him."

The man's last statement would be cryptic if Kenji was not already familiar with the concept. One had to be careful who he associated with to avoid ending up bloody or worse. Then again, he had this endearing habit of damning the consequences to do the right thing, so...
"Mm, I know that well. Yakuza upstarts who think the bossman will make everything go away as long as they bring back a shiny yen..." The easterner glanced at his fallen foe for a moment before regarding the masked man again. "It's not my first run-in with those sorts of guys. What about you, though? Going around at night in a getup like that, carrying a practical weapon most people would think is archaic... This is far from your first night, isn't it?"
His question was rhetorical, of course. Why else would someone risk looking like an oddball for their perception of justice? Continuing, he shoved his hands in his pockets, cocking his head. "This is... Normally where I'd ask your name and give you mine, but I don't know if that's your thing. You can see why I'd think that, right?"

- Yen, huh? This guy wasn't from around these parts based on that. Valo wasn't sure if he was accustomed to violence where he was from, but he claimed it wasn't his first run-in...and it definitely wasn't going to be his last. Guys like him could never stay out of danger, not when they were so willing to risk their lives for the safety of a stranger. No one with a heart could stop themselves from being that selfless, or so Valo liked to believe.
"... I've only been at this for a few weeks myself." He admitted. He was going to leave out the fact he was stabbed, shot, and thrown out the window of a twenty floor building for another time.
- He looked down at his bow, noting the man's words. Valo used it for a variety of reasons. "A bow is silent and is easy to use at almost any range. Also serves for much more use than a gun in my hands." He pointed to his quiver, filled with arrows of various types, whether he needed to blow something up, tranquilize someone, or plant a tracking device. "And I feel like it's in my blood..." He left out the fact that his ancestor Katsumi was said to have been a great archer.
"As for my name..." He looked away, remembering he couldn't just give his name out. "I keep that hidden... to protect my family. But I'm called..." He pondered for a moment... not able to come up with any other names other than what Sarah decided for him. "...The Hood."

Kenji mulled over the man's words as he carried on. He seemed honest, though without a proper look at his eyes, it wasn't a certainty. A couple of weeks as a vigilante, and he seemed... Comfortable enough in the role. Comfortable enough to stop and talk shop with a stranger like himself. His choice of the bow had its merits without a doubt; Kenji himself was familiar with them due to his upbringing, but they weren't his specialty. He could also resonate with the idea of something being in your blood, but opted not to pry further on that particular topic. As for the name...
"The Hood? Well, I'd almost recommend Red Hood, but I'm pretty sure that's copyrighted." He paused for a moment as if pondering this idea, then chuckled again, shaking his head to emphasize that he wasn't serious. "I'm Kyuketsuki. It's not a name of my choice, but it's one I've been tagged with. Regardless, it's nice to meet you, Hood."

Kyuketsuki?
"Now, my Japanese isn't the best... but doesn't that mean vampire?"
- Curious. Valo wondered why the man had such a name. He certainly didn't look like the type to feast on someone's blood... otherwise he'd have been drinking the gallons of it that covered the unconscious guy, right? Unless he was one of those vampires that preferred virgin women or something.
"Nevermind that, it's a pleasure to meet you as well, Kyuketsuki. If you're anything like your first impression has let on... perhaps you could consider me an ally from this point."

"I'll do that, Hood," Kenji timely responded, offering a mild but friendly smile to his apparent new comrade. While they were far from being on a mutually-trustworthy level, he could at least tell from this first impression that Hood was an honorable type. It would be interesting - perhaps fulfilling - to run into him more often in the future. Glancing up toward the sky, he unconsciously answered the vigilante's prior question as his eyes took on a much more metallic glint; whether it was from the moon above was not certain. "It does mean vampire, yeah... The full term they've dubbed me is 'Suchīru-me Kyūketsuki,' the steel-eyed vampire. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but what do I know?"
Looking back down to his comrade, provided Hood was even still there, he would continue on a lighter topic, the young man's eyes back to their cool brown. "Hey, I'm not holding you up here, am I? If you've got more stuff to do tonight, we can do this another time. It's no problem with me."

They would not be able to notice, due to the darkness, but a black mist would slowly start to make its way to the two, even since the beginning of their encounter. By now, they would begin to feel a strange coldness in the air - one almost painful, causing sharp headaches. It would become painfully quiet all around them, and everything would begin to seem as though it was freezing over.
"Morei. Miyamoto."
A powerful voice would shatter the illusion of the quiet, and, should either of the two look down the alley, they would see a strange, large hooded figure who easily stood at least a few feet taller than the two.
We have come. Do not resist us."
The figure would approach the two, drawing its shadowy hands from its cloak, and it would approach, aiming to touch their foreheads. If it did, the two would fall into unconsciousness after feeling an incredibly sharp pain in their heads.

Heh.
- This steel-eyed vampire was quite the peculiar one. Most would try to get to know more about a hooded vigilante, but he was fine with meeting up at another time as though they were pals. Well, maybe they could be someday. But for now, only one person knew his secret...
"What... the fuck...?"
- It began to get very cold and dark suddenly, and Valo's eyes widened as he heard his name spoken out loud. Seeing a hooded and dark figure down the alleyway, Valo drew his bow, readying an arrow as he backed up slowly.
"Whoever you are, stay back! I'm warning you! Kyuketsuki, get behind me!"
- He felt an immense fear surging through his body. This thing looked like it was out of a horror movie or something. If this was a regular person, this was all too elaborate.
"Val... breaking... signal... what's going..."
- Sarah was calling to him in his earpiece, but the signal was breaking up horribly and he could only make bits and pieces out through the static, so he couldn't count on her help right now either.
- If this thing continued to approach, Valo would fire an arrow at its leg in an attempt to halt its advance. Hopefully this could buy them time to get out of there.

With virtually no warning, Kenji's head started to ache, and their surroundings became supernaturally cold. Alarm bells were ringing in his mind, but he knew not what the definitive source was, until he saw it. A hooded, ebony thing that had a good few feet over both him and Hood. Though it was describable, it still made little sense to Kenji, and his mind went to the closest comparison that he could think of as the vigilante beckoned him back and nocked an arrow.
"What the hell...? Are you an oni?"
He stepped back as he'd been directed, but the rational side of him was screaming to turn tail and run for his life. The part of him that made him Kenji, however, refused to abandon a potential new friend and fellow potential victim to whatever monstrosity stood before them. He looked around for some kind of weapon, fearing that fists and feet would do scant good. The measured steel from before was well out of reach, but he managed to discover a loose, sturdy-looking brick by his feet. Kenji kicked it up into his open hand and took another couple steps back, readying his throwing arm. If the perceived oni before them advanced, and Hood loosed his arrow, he in turn would pitch his brick as hard as he could at its opposite knee to stifle or halt its movement. With such a combined effort, perhaps they could make it out of here.
It was certainly worth a try.

As the arrow and the brick neared the figure's body, they would disintegrate, being dust before they even connected with its body. It continued its approach, faster now, arms still extended. Considering their attack did not work, it would have bee significantly closer than it was when it first appeared, and they were likely to fall victim to its grasp unless they ran.
"Do not resist."

You gotta be shitting me...
- Valo's eyes widened as the arrow and brick just disinte-fucking-grated, and the thing just advanced more quickly. It was if all they managed to do was fuel its anger, or desire, or whatever the hell it was after them for. Valo wasn't planning on becoming demon snack food tonight though.
"We're boned if we stick around! Follow me! And grab onto me as soon as you see my arrow let loose!"
- He quickly turned around and grabbed an arrow from his quiver as he began to run. Aiming it up high towards the rooftops, he fired it, and it would sail up and catch onto a high roof. Attached to it was a long and sturdy line that connected to his bow. The moment Kyu grabbed onto him (if he decided to follow), he would hit a mechanism on his bow that would send them both flying upwards and hopefully onto the top of the building... if this thing didn't get them first.

It was a truly spectacular failure, seeing both the well-aimed arrow and Kenji's own sailing brick literally disintegrate before their eyes. The creature in turn picked up speed, as if they'd earned its ire somehow. This was not going in their favor, and rational thinking continued to demand his immediate flight, but Kenji refused to let this stop him from coming out of this encounter alive, and with his newfound companion if at all possible.
As that thought ran through his mind, Hood barked a command to grab onto him when he loosed an arrow, prompting him to look at where he was aiming his next shot. Before the arrow-on-a-string caught its mark, Kenji realized it was a grappling arrow - not unlike those found in anime and superhero shows. As told, he quickly grabbed on right as the arrow hooked in, staring down the unsettling nightmare that moved in on them.
