A lunch box is seen last Friday, around 12:37:08pm with an encouraging note packed inside. This appalling display that utterly lacked manliness has left many students stunned and outrage, as some decided, after a long while, to speak out against it.

[OoC: Doing a weird sorta timeskip with this thread. It's taking place after Macht shows Equilibrium the hideout, even though that hasn't actually happened yet.] It had been more than a week since that last Riot attack on the school... a week since so many lives were lost, for no reason at all, a week since Macht formed this coalition, a week since he'd seen any progress in himself or those who stepped up to work with him. It was frustrating, to say the least. Macht knew, deep down, he could take any of the Riot Elite in a one-on-one, but he couldn't fight them all by himself, and he had damn near no one who was ready to jump into the fray. Yet, the longer they waited, the more Riot could go around doing what they did... it was infuriating. Macht was in the training arena in the center of the first floor of the warehouse, practicing on a steel practice dummy ( this, only steel). He'd been going at it for hours, at the least, and bruises covered his arms and shins to show it. He'd been venting all of his anger, this entire time, in his training. So many friends of his were already gone, and all he could do for them was bide his time and kill ten Riot members for every one friend he lost. Every time he struck the dummy, he imagined those men - Kaiser, Mikey, Ty, even Seth - being crushed under his blows. Upset with his lack of progress, Macht made one final strike at the dummy and ripped the steel out of the ground, slamming his right forearm into it. It whipped across the arena, slamming into another dummy and bending around it. The sweaty, panting German fell to his knees, gritting his teeth. Even when he thought he was alone, he did everything he could to fight back the surge of tears he knew was imminent.

Vivi looked around the ware house that was apparently Equilibriums new base of operations. She had come to take a look around, but part of her just wanted to see Macht again, and see if he was okay. He obviously didn’t need anyone to worry about him but… what the hey. She even brought him cookies. Unfortunately, he probably wasn’t in the mood for that, but she’d make him take them anyway. She left the box somewhere easy to see so he could find it later. There was a note taped to it reading:
Macht — I didn’t make these specifically for you, I had extra, so shut up. ~Vivi
Following the noise, Vivi eventually found Macht pounding on a training dummy. With a powerful finishing blow, he completely uprooted the thing. The red haired boy then fell to his knees, and Vivi felt concern prick at her heart.
“Macht!” she ran over to him and stopped a few feet away, “'You alright?”
Stupid question, he obviously wasn’t. Aside from the bruises dotting his body, she knew the pain he felt had to be more than physical. Emotional support had never been her forte though, so she wasn’t quite sure what to do.

Wide eyed, Macht's attention shot to Vivi, who he didn't know was even around right now. If he was aware, he would have kept this little outburst to himself, but it was a little late for that, it seemed. She would see his eye watering and his bottom jaw quavering as she approached, no matter how much he tried to hide it. He tried to respond to her, but he knew he would lose the focus he'd been dedicating to holding back the tears. All he could respond with was an unsure nod, and his gaze returned to the floor.
Macht rose a bruised and bloodied hand, putting the palm to his eye. As a coping mechanism, he began to laugh solemnly, the tears that did escape being caught by skin, blood, and dirt. If he couldn't keep his composure, he could at least play the hysteria off as something other than utter sorrow. And yet, he couldn't even do that.
"You should knock next time, yeah?" He managed to force out, fighting back the sobs he could feel forcing their way through his throat.

It occurred to Vivi it might have been best to walk away and pretend she didn't see him. He was the First Pillar after all, right? The last thing he'd want would be for a student to see him like this... Had Macht been a girl, she probably would've hugged him and tried to comfort him, but she was pretty sure most guys wouldn't appreciate that... especially not Macht. She hadn't known him for to long, but even so, she never imagined she'd see him cry.
Vivi tentatively sat back on her heels and wrapped her arms around her knees, looking him in the eye. She didn't know if she was succeeding, but she did her best not to make her concern to apparent on her face.
"I'll keep that in mind..." she replied, "Maybe you should take a break?"
At this point, she was just trying to think of a way to help him without making things worse. Sadly, not very many ideas were coming to mind. If he agreed to rest, she considered seeing if she could get him to talk about his problems. She was no therapist, but she thought maybe if she could understand how he felt to a certain extent, she could offer a bit more support.

... Take a break?
Macht's hands fell to his sides again, and he stared at the floor. He couldn't justify taking a break - not when he'd seen no progress. Against an enemy as powerful as Riot, they needed to be prepared, Macht needed to be prepared so that he wouldn't have to lose anyone else. If he took a break, he'd be wasting precious time, and yet, he was in dire need of one, as much as it would pain him to admit.
Leaning forward, Macht slammed a heavy fist into the ground, tearing apart the padding and ripping into the concrete, as well as damn near destroying his fist. It hurt, but not physically. The pain he felt was in what he saw as failures. He'd never felt so damn hopeless before.
"I guess I should, huh..?" A long pause. "Why are you, uh... here, right now?"
Most weren't. No one really spent their time here besides Macht and the security outfit.

Vivi’s eyes widened when Macht punched into the ground. The concrete cracked around his fist, and she was pretty sure he was brutally damaging himself as well. He was obviously stressed… but if he kept this up, he’d only hurt himself.
“Macht, stop,” Vivi said urgently, looking him in the eye, “...We should find a place to sit or something.”
At his question, she paused and blinked a few times.
“Well, I thought I’d check the place out," she shrugged, “That and, uh… I was a little worried about you.”
When she’d responded to the coalition call, she couldn’t help but notice how different he seemed… it wasn’t super obvious, but the guy had a different vibe to him. It seemed like he was beating himself up over what happened, and Vivi felt she needed to find a way to get him to stop.

Macht's eye widened in surprise. Never before had anyone spoken to him with even a hint or implication of care, so he was evidently taken aback and speechless for a moment. All he could do for now was nod, and even that took a modicum of effort.
"I... Yeah. Sure."
He didn't respond to the worry simply because he didn't know how, but at her suggestion he attempted to get to his feet, and to no avail. He'd beaten himself to the point where he could hardly stand, and the moment he got to his feet, he stumbled forward and crashed onto the mat. He managed to catch himself, landing on his hands, but when he tried to support himself, his arms were shaking too heavily to be effective. To fix this, he just went back to a kneel.
"... I can't."
Useless.

The longer she watched him, the more difficult it was to keep up a calm demeanor. Her brow began to tense with worry, and she bit her lip. Vivi didn’t like to see people in pain as a general rule, but it was kind of different with Macht. He'd always seemed to have a stone wall of sorts built around himself, and it was as if it were slowly crumbling.
When he fell back onto the mat, Vivi hesitated a moment, before tentatively coming and sitting next to him. She drew her knees up to her chest, and wrapped her arms around them, keeping violet eyes down cast.
“That’s alright… don’t push yourself. Just rest here, yeah?”
Vivi inhaled slightly before continuing. She was about to make an assumption, but she was pretty sure it was correct.
“Listen… don’t beat yourself up over what happened with Riot,” she spoke slowly and glanced over at him, “We gave it our best shot… now we just need to try again. Kicking yourself over it isn’t gonna help anyone.”

Macht just nodded again. He was doing a lot of that right now. It was easy, it got his point across, and it didn't hurt, which was a nice bonus. A small smile was forced onto his face, more out of irony than anything else. He didn't like that he was being seen like this, at a time when he was so unbelievably vulnerable.
"I should have been able to do more," he began quietly. Though there wasn't much volume, the underlying rage was quite evident. "My job is to protect the student body, and I failed. I failed them, I failed the Regulators, I failed Shugo..."
A pause.
"Jack and Tyler Scott. Barry Curry. Martin Knowles. Gene Calloway. John Gavyns. Vicky Kent. Marissa Jones. Megan Mekes. Christa Orm - those are only a few of the people who didn't get to experience life because I wasn't strong enough to protect them." Macht laughed in self-loathing, his right hand running through his hair. "When I met Knuckles, I was weak. He beat me without even trying. A month later, I could floor him, and hold my own with some of the toughest people I've ever known. Then Riot shows up and they make fools out of us, and no matter how hard I try, I'm just... I'm not making any progress."

He was blaming himself for everything… she’d seen this before with Kaya. Taking responsibly for every bad thing to come upon the others in her school. The burden she set upon herself only ate her up from the inside… was it happening to Macht too?
“You never really know how strong you are, until being strong is the only choice you have… I think going up against Riot really showed us our limits, but they also gave us a goal. As long as you have something to strive for, and the will to do it, you can improve. With as much work as you’ve been putting into it, you’re bound to get stronger. Just not all at once.”
Vivi paused for a moment, and brushed her hair out of her eyes. She wasn't used to talking this much, but then again, she usually didn’t have a reason to do so. Now she was trying to support Macht, just as her old friend back in boarding school did, up until the end. Vivi doubted she would be here to begin with, if it weren’t for that girl.
“Failure isn’t set in stone, y’know… there’s still a chance to turn things around. I mean, our school’s still standing, and while not everyone made it, a lot of us are still alive and kicking. You might say it’s wishful thinking… but I’d rather call it hope.”
If only it were that simple… Riot’s top fighters were total monsters, but maybe if they got the pillars, the school captain, and five-five-two’s fighters together they could stand a chance? At this point, it seemed like the key was to get the students to stop fighting each other, and unite against a common enemy. In a school like this, however, it was probably much more easier said then done.

"I'm stuck," Macht said firmly, an ironic smile on his face. He'd been striving, training, doing what he could, and that was exactly why he was where he was now. Maybe he could get stronger again in the near future, but he didn't see it, and he didn't know why. It was painful, to say the least.
"I've never seen anyone as strong as Mikey..." he mused for a moment, thinking back on it. The man was the fastest person he'd ever seen, even faster than Macht himself. That was damn near impossible, or so he thought. Every single one of those riot guys was ten notches above everything Macht was ever used to. "I know we can beat him, I just... I don't know how. And that's what's killing me."

“Mikey is pretty tough…”
That was a massive understatement. If it hand’t been for Valo and Shugo, she likely would be in the hospital sustaining much worse injuries than a few broken ribs and a screwed up shoulder. Probably would've been dead, actually. She had been totally powerless against him, and it seemed to have been that way with Macht as well. And if Macht couldn’t best the guy... she didn’t know who could.
Vivi hesitated for a moment, before tentatively patting Macht’s back. The gesture was light and somewhat awkward, but the girl had good intentions. She returned her hand to her lap and let out a small exasperated sigh. “Well, don’t die on us yet, buddy. If we’re ever gonna find a way to take them down, we’re gonna need you.”

Maybe it was the way she spoke to him, but something Vivi said sort of set the gears in Macht's head back in motion. He was silent for a moment, completely still, but then a light smile appeared on his face as he turned to face his blue-haired friend. A sigh escaped his lips and he wiped the dirt off his face. "Vivi," he started, his voice quiet and solemn, but more peaceful than it was a moment ago. He was still angry, but his head was clearer for the moment. "I'm glad you're here, y'know? I don't have a lot of allies at all. Most people hate me, actually, but... you're someone I know I can count on, and knowing you'll be at my side for all of this... it's pretty reassuring."
That was about as much of a heart-to-heart as anyone could get from the red-head. He'd laid his emotions out there like that without hesitation, but he wasn't going to linger in a state of vulnerability. He couldn't. He had a facade to keep up, and he'd be damned if he lost it completely. At least this outburst was a short one. "Think you can help me to a bed? I don't think I can get there by myself, haha." He pointed over to the west of the arena, where there were a bunch of rooms set up. He didn't care which, he just needed to lay down on one of the beds. They were definitely softer than this padding, and he needed to recover.

Vivi looked into Macht’s eyes as he spoke, though she felt the urge to stare at the ground. He definitely wasn’t laying it on thick or anything, but she wasn’t used to people expressing gratitude to her. In her early child hood years the only person she ever heard ‘thank you’ was from Kaya, up until she died, and at work, her service was owed, so no gratitude there either. Just being shoved around and called names instead.
“Yeah, I’ve got your back, man,” a slight smile tugged at the corners of her mouth, “And... I’m glad to hear that."
At his request, Vivi nodded.
“Sure thing,” she chuckled, “You look like you could use a bit of rest.”
Vivi came and took one of his arms, putting it around her shoulders and then wrapped one of her arms around his waist. She did her best to support them as they stood up. Though she was a good deal smaller than him, she was fairly strong and it wasn’t like he’d be leaning on her with his full weight.
Vivi would adjust her pace to whatever worked for Macht as they made their way toward one of the rooms, glancing up at him occasionally. It seemed like he’d been working so hard, he’d nearly reached his breaking point. She wasn’t sure why, but she felt a strange sense of pain at seeing her friend like this, and wished there was some way she could help him more. Sadly, he probably wouldn’t truly feel better until Riot was finished… but then again, he might not even after that. For now, she could only hope for the best.
Vivi picked one of the rooms and walked inside, stopping next to the bed so Macht could sit down.
“Can I help with anything else? Like, do you need a glass of water or something?” she asked, her brow furrowed in worry. She wasn't trying to coddle him or anything, just lend some support in any way she could.
For some reason, she didn’t want to leave him just yet. Part of her wanted to stay just to make sure he didn’t hurt himself anymore, and maybe try lift his spirits a bit. But the guy obviously needed his rest, so if he really wanted her too, she’d probably have to take her leave soon.

One thing that set Vivi part from everyone, even Knuckles at this point, was that she was there when Macht needed her. Of course, Lex was too, but this was still different - she showed up to help when Macht was at his worst, and he didn't have anyone to help him in those kinds of spots before. Maybe it was just a coincidence, but it was enough to send the one-eyed German a message. He was going to do everything he could to keep this woman in his life, be it as a comrade or something different entirely. Only time would tell.
"Thank you so much," He started as he laid down, groaning in pain. When she asked him else he needed, he simply sat in silence for a moment. He didn't need anything but his rest, honestly, but shooing her away was something that rubbed him the wrong way, for some reason. Macht only smiled up at her, putting a hand up to hers if he could reach it. "I'm... Good. I'm good. If there's anything I need, it's more people like you in my life. Again, thank you for this."
