A lunch box is seen last Friday, around 12:37:08pm with an encouraging note packed inside. This appalling display that utterly lacked manliness has left many students stunned and outrage, as some decided, after a long while, to speak out against it.

Matrix smiles slightly and nods at Kenji's response. And it's not like he can hear Kenji's thoughts, but it is true, he's one of the types to keep the same face regardless of what's happening. Though he actually is pretty excited since he can't even remember the last time he had a spar. He guides Kenji out of the apartment and soon out of the building. As they walk to the gym, they get into a less shady area, so it's a bit more comforting.
Entering the gym within ten minutes, Matrix talks to the woman at the front desk, probably asking for a guest pass or something. In the end he smiles and walks back to Kenji. "The basketball court is open, so we can spar in there if you'd like." He seems a bit more enthusiastic now that they are about to fight.

Following his newfound acquaintance, Kenji found that the two of them reached the gym in about ten minutes. He observed Matrix talking to the secretary, waiting patiently for the two of them to finish before they reunited. The basketball court was recommended as their stomping ground for the day. Not a bad pick, considering their openness. Returning Matrix's smile, he responded, "Sounds good to me. Let's hit the court."

Matrix continues to smile as Kenji smiles back at him. "Let's go." He walks them to the gym which is actually rather nice, it looks newly refurbished or just well taken care of. Matrix then starts to stretch a bit and starts to talk while he does. "So, I just remembered we should have probably brought protective gear, because the shinai's can hurt. How about we say no head shots and hold back the force by... fifty percent?"
As he waits for an answer he checks his shinai again to make sure it's in perfect shape. Actually the spare one he has looks brand new and the one he's using looks rather old. It's a bit odd why he's using the one he is.

Upon arriving at the vacant basketball court, Kenji too begins to stretch, quietly listening to Matrix. Apparently, the boy had forgotten about protective gear. This thought amused Kenji, because the last time he'd used any protective gear when wielding a blade, whether it was a shinai or his polished steel, he was just becoming a teenager. Still, if his sparring partner was uncomfortable fighting without protection, he would respect his wishes so long as this didn't turn into a real fight for any given reason.
"If that'd make you feel more comfortable, then I have no reason not to accomodate you," Kenji smiled, nodding before checking his own shinai again. This one appeared to be a recent buy, whereas Matrix's was weathered from usage. It was clear why the easterner was given this one; his host was more in tune with his current shinai and wasn't yet willing to switch swords. He chuckled at the thought, understanding such a mindset completely. "I'll avoid your head and watch my power. Of course, I tend to measure my force anyway, so that's not much different from normal."

Matrix watches Kenji's response and comes to a conclusion that Kenji didn't really use protective gear anymore. Feeling a bit embarrassed he looks away and mumbles. "I mean, if you don't like those rules it's fine... I just haven't fought anyone in a long time so I don't really know how much damage I'll do..."
He stands up and does a jab and quick strike down all at a reasonable speed and a lot of strength. "I just haven't found anyone who does the sport." He remembers a while ago as he tried to teach Basil and it didn't go so well... At least Basil ended up with a broken arm and then they had a bill they couldn't pay... Matrix puts the shinai to rest on his shoulders. "By the way, how did you learn?"

Kenji was amused by Matrix's mumbling. He didn't disdain his acquaintance for still using protective gear; everybody had their right to take their time advancing to not using protection, although in proper kendo tournaments, it was practically a requirement. He simply continued stretching while listening.
When asked about how he learned the art, Kenji stopped to let his body relax, standing straight and tucking his shinai back into his belt loop. It truly looked as if he was packing a sheathed sword at his side, both by how he situated and how he stood, arms folded over his chest. The posture wasn't meant to be intimidating, though Matrix might or might not find it such; it was simply how he chose to stand. "Well, I was raised with it. I come from a semi-traditional clan directly descended from samurai; that is, we subscribe in equal parts to both the ways of the past and the present. I leaned more toward the present, except when it came to fighting." He paused, glancing up toward the ceiling in thought before continuing. "My father brought me up on kendo starting at age six; by his words, not mine, I excelled at it. From age seven onward, I also trained in my clan's inherited and signature art: Hyōhō Niten Ichi-ryū."
Another pause following his honest testimony. While from some mouths everything he was saying might come off as bragging, Kenji spoke in a decidedly unbiased, factual manner, even when referencing his father's praise. It was as if he lacked an ego with which he could brag. Kenji looked back down at Matrix, smiling as he concluded his explanation. "If it tells you anything, I'm currently eighteen years of age."

Matrix nods at Kenji as he tells his story. He's not jealous at all and understands that Kenji is trying to be modest. He just knows they had different upbringings, that was all.
He finishes stretching and gets to the center of the gym, smiling slightly. "You ready to play?" He gives a few more practice swings while he's waiting. From the nice little monologue Kenji just gave he knows he will have no chance of winning based on skill, so he'd have to rely on strength, but since this is a friendly spar, he's jut going to enjoy the fight.

Kenji joined Matrix at the center of the arena, dropping his arms. He nodded with a smile as he drew the shinai at his hip, giving it a couple of fast swings as a final examination of its balance and weight. It was a satisfactory practice weapon, comparable to his old weathered shinai. "I'm ready if you are. Let's enjoy this." With that, he settled into a standard kendo stance, starting things off simply as he awaited Matrix's move.

Matrix also gets into the standard stance, then moves forwards towards Kenji and tries a forward stab to his side waist. If it fails he will move back to his original position to prepare for a counter attack.
((soo... I don't actually do kendo, so feel free to correct me, and i'll edit the post, just do want Matrix to end up not knowing a thing))

Kenji turned his shinai down and deflected Matrix's thrust harmlessly away from him. When the boy attempted to move back into his initial position, Kenji advanced with him, swinging fast but not hard at his right wrist. If he met failure, he'd hold his position unless Matrix advanced, in which case he'd match his pace almost as if sticking to the boy's body; regardless of if he became stationary or followed his sparring partner, he'd pull his shinai close for defense, ready to react as need be.

Matrix notices his first thrust is harmless which he was expecting to be, he more or less was testing the waters of how Kenji would act. When he sees the fast swing, he quickly moves his shinai to a position to deflect it. With his strength he should be able to take it without flinching, but then Kenji was also pretty strong it seemed. As the spar continued he realized Kenji was sticking to him like a starfish, and would not let him any breathing room.
Matrix debated normal tactics wouldn't beat Kenji, so he'd have to be more creative. So he backed away slowly while slowly walking to the left as well, rotating the fight. He would suddenly step closer to Kenji and get ready to strike his wrist, but stops short and goes back again. Then he would try to quicken to the right side and do a jab towards the right.

Kenji continued to closely follow Matrix's movements, noting subconsciously that he seemed to be rotating their positions. Perhaps he was attempting to use the easterner's willingness to stick so close to his advantage? Next came a sudden step-up before the redhead seemed to be ready to swing at his wrist, but Kenji detected a possible feint, so he simply lowered his shinai a couple inches to give the impression of preparation. When Matrix attempted to move to his right side and jab, he reacted fluidly by swinging his shinai down into his adversary's again to deflect it, then followed by bouncing it from the wooden blade and up at the redhead's throat.
If Matrix was unable to avoid it or counter, he'd stop short with the tip at his throat and call out his striking point, "Tsuki. (Throat.)" If he was, however, then Kenji would step back and once more settle his shinai before his torso.

Matrix frowns as his strike didn't work, however he didn't expect Kenji to be so quick with transitioning to an attack. So when Kenji strikes at his throat, he misses the opportunity to guard. When Kenji put the shinai back to his side, Matrix laughed lightly. "Oh, wow, you're really good, I guess I still have a lot to practice on." He put his shinai over his shoulder, not sure if Kenji wants to continue. He's up for another round if wanted, but not sure about the other, so he just wants to wait for Kenji to respond.

"No, you're not bad yourself," Kenji admitted with a smile, tapping Matrix's unoccupied shoulder with his own shinai gently. He took a few steps back and settled back into his stance, nodding to his sparring partner. "Let's continue."
----------- [One & 1/2 Hours Later] -----------
In the end, while Matrix picked up his fair share of strikes, the boy's stamina was lacking in comparison to his might and cunning, whereas Kenji's long-term experience with kendo and his energy reserves allowed him to maintain the lead. Kenji brushed a bead of sweat off of his eyebrow as the last match ended in his favor, and he laughed in satisfaction. He had yet until now to find a kendo practitioner - let alone a swordsman of any variety - to go a few friendly rounds yet, so this was a great day for him. "Ahaha~! This has been fun, genuinely, but I think we should call it here this time. It'll be getting late before long, and you were already in training once day; I don't want to send you back to your brother as a mess."

Matrix laughs slightly and looks at Kenji. "Yeah, I think you're right. I feel like I'm going to feel this tomorrow." He walks to his stuff and grabs some water, downing the entire bottle. While he wipes his lips he checks his phone and pauses as he has a text from Basil.
"Umm... I was trying to make hamburgers... for some reason they started smoking..." -Basil
Matrix groans and looks over at Kenji. "Hey, I need to go before Basil burns down the place, though you can stay for dinner if you want." He scratches the back of his head as it seems he's making an effort into being rather nice.
