You ain't that strong Mute!
Rei continued to walk through the hallway, trying to leave the school building. With nothing on his agenda, he had the slightest hope that class would somehow peak his interest. But like all other attempts, it was a failure. Within ten minutes of the teacher talking, Rei found himself standing up, making his way to the door. The critiques of the teacher, much like the yells from the third year student following him right now with his posse, went unnoticed in Rei's mind. It was his third year as a Freshman, and yet no effort has been made to get out of the continuous rut. For someone who disliked routine, Rei still was not making the necessary efforts to try and get out of it.
You hear me, bruh?!
Kane, the third year student, continued to try and get Rei's attention. With a reputation as one of the toughest students in this facility, he had to prove himself to spectators. Rei was the student that no one bothered. Whether it was fear or simply assuming that he was dumb due to his muteness, Rei was always noticed, but untouchable. Kane sought to change that. Rei couldn't care less, even when Kane slapped his hand on his right shoulder, gripping it tightly.
You think just 'cause you gotta name, you doin' big shit?
Rei stopped walking. Students that were on their way to class or simply causing trouble in the hallway turned all their attention to the two. Rei's name was known, but his fighting was an occurrence that much of the population had never seen for themselves. The stories and rumors of him beating that man in an alleyway some years ago did not add up to his apathetic demeanor, and were therefore disregarded. But the rumors still remained in the minds of these students, hoping that one day, they could find out for themselves if "Mute" really had something in him. Rei turned his head slightly to the right and locked eyes with Kane, unwavering in his stare. Kane kept composure in his face, but Rei could feel his hand slightly quiver on his shoulder. Kane was slightly frightened. And Rei knew. But Rei also knew that Kane had his reputation at stake. He wouldn't simply walk away.
You ain't shit, Mute...
Those were Kane's last words before he shoved Rei with both hands, forcing him to turn around. Students crowded around, yelling about how the Mute would finally show what they all were told he has. Kane smirked, a small amount of confidence returning in his system after putting some space between him and the notorious Mute.
And Imma show everyone 'round here you ain't shit...
Rei's stare still remained strong. He could see through Kane's facade of courage. And soon, the students surrounding them would be able to see through it as well. Rei refused to remove his hands from his pockets for something that did not even grab his attention or make him use words. Kane had his fists up, ready to land a punch. Rei did not plan on moving out of the way. In the slightest amount possible, Rei was somewhat curious about Kane's reputation as well. He was known for his "spur-of-the-moment" fights, giving himself the nickname, "Hothead". Many students avoided walking in the same hallway as Kane due to the slight chance that he might pop off. But Rei knew that Kane only fought those that he believed would give him a guaranteed win. Maybe others knew it too. Maybe that was why Kane felt the sudden urge to prove himself to those around him. There've been rumors that Kane has been shooting for the top to be one of the Pillars that runs this establishment. Maybe Rei was to be his stepping stone to the next level.
The students surrounding both Kane and Rei began murmuring amongst themselves.
"Are they gonna fight or not?"
"Kane's scared...he won't even swing..."
"What's Mute doin'?"
"Mute's gonna beat his ass!"
"Fight already!"
The crowd grew impatient; Kane took notice, and Rei has noticed for a while now. If Kane was not careful, the name he had been making for himself would disappear in an instant, shadowed by the rumor that he was scared shitless of fighting the Mute. Someone who was not even close to becoming a Pillar. Kane wasted no more time, and charged towards Rei hastily, who still did not show an ounce of movement or interest. Kane swung a right hook, his fist connecting clean with Kane's left cheek. The crowd roared "Hothead" in repetition and with gusto. Kane hit the Mute. Kane beat the Mute. The Mute wasn't so tough after all, unable to even dodge a simple swing by Hothead Kane. Kane's eyes were closed in excitement, his immense grin making his eyelids even tighter as his thoughts consumed him.
"He wasn't shit! Mute wasn't anything. I'm headin' up to the Pillars, baby!"
Kane was so involved with his own thoughts that he did not hear the crowd stop their cheering. He did not even notice that Rei remained in the same position that he was before the punch, both hands still in his pockets, and his stare still strong. The punch did not phase Rei in the slightest, his head unmoved in even the slightest inch. Kane, still obsessed with his own confidence, delivered a blow to Rei's stomach with his left, following it with an uppercut to Rei's chin with his right. Both connected as clean, if not cleaner, than the first right hook. But the hits were not greeted with the same roars of excitement and praise. They were not greeted with anything but silence. Kane finally took notice, and dared to look up at the face of the Mute whom he already thought he defeated. Rei still stood as a statue, his glare on Kane even stronger than ever, and his disinterest all the more stronger. It seemed that Hothead Kane's reputation was as fallacious as he previously thought. Rei continued to stare down at the now trembling Kane as his hands slowly lowered to his sides, his eyes wide open and unable to move from the fixated gaze of Rei. And it was in complete silence that Rei, hands still in his pockets, slowly turned back around to continue his walk down the hallway.
"Hothead couldn't even hurt Mute!"
"He hit 'em like three times and still didn't do anything..."
"Mute's scary as hell..."
"Hothead's shaking!"
Mixes of praise and fear of Rei and insults to Kane were heard all throughout the crowd. They hurt Kane more than anyone, who had everything at stake in this one fight, or whatever one could even call it.
"Looks like you picked the wrong guy, Hothead!"
A random student in the dispersing crowd hollered in amusement as the surrounding student body roared in laughter. Beforehand, no one would have dared to bother Kane. Kane knew this. The students knew this. Rei knew this. And it was with that statement that Rei finally turned back around to face the scene. He knew that things would soon get interesting. What was Kane willing to do to get his reputation back, or rather, what could he do? Rei took a seat in front of a row of lockers, leaning his back against it and facing the waining crowd and an immobile Kane. Everyone took notice.
"Hothead got cold!"
The crowd bellowed again as fewer and fewer people remained to continue watching this pitiful scene. Even with three clean blows, Mute remained Mute, not even giving Kane the satisfaction of acknowledging his presence. Kane was nothing, and the crowd soon realized that he was nothing. The rumors were next to know that he did not amount to anything but picking good targets. Kane gritted his teeth, letting out a howl of anger, directing his rage of Rei to the crowd, a much easier target.
"Who said that shit?!"
Rei continued to watch, curious as to what Kane might do for the sake of his tarnished reputation. The crowd lost their once-held confidence as the Hothead returned to his former self, scouting the crowd for the smart-mouthed spectators that finally, after three years, called him out in public. Kane locked eyes with the smallest student he could take notice of, a frail, book-holding student that was walking int he complete opposite directon away from the scene. Kane wasted no time. He sprinted to the kid, wrapping his head in his right arm for one of his signature headlocks.
"Hothead never left the building! Know who you're dealin' wit'!"
The student cried for help as Kane tossed him on the floor, beginning to kick him vigorously. Some student watched from a distance. The majority of the students knew that Kane was too scared to take on Rei, who still continued to stare at the situation just a few feet away.
"Kane's not shit..."
The mumbles of the hallway continued to haunt Kane as he stomped and kicked the student without interruption or intention of stopping. The boy could not even cry anymore. The pain was too much. And yet Kane continued. Whether it was to prove to himself that he was still worth something or to the crowd that no longer existed, Rei could not tell. But no thoughts of valor or of a savior complex came to Rei's mind. There was no inkling in his body that gave him the urge to save that kid from trouble. Rei continued to watch in silence, absent expression, as Kane tried to continue his reign as Hothead in failure. Maybe coming to school was not a complete waste of time.
