it's alright

”Hello! Hello! You shiiiiiiiny booooyyyyy~!”
Brrrrrrrvvvvvvttttttt! Brrrrvvvvvvvvtttttttt!
“Grahh… Dammit… alright. I get it.”
Pushing my face back down into my pillow, my left hand reached out to the side table, grabbing a hold of my cell phone. Even though I hadn’t been the one who had set that ring tone, I knew who was calling me due to the personalized ringtone. A smile appeared on my lips as I swiped the answer key before putting the phone up to my ear.
“Hey Sarah. Kudos on the ring tone. Guessing you changed it because I said I was prettier tha- …What? What the hell do you mean my father’s in jail? No. Don’t come over. I’m fine.”
I clicked off the phone and rolled over onto my back. Yuy Corp was under investigation and the wayward father that had taken me in when my mother moved to California with my brothers was in jail. What the hell was going on? I had to figure it out one way or another. I couldn’t just sit around. Throwing the covers off of my body, my frame rose from the bed. Taking a shower, I got dressed in a black slim fit suit. I used a plain silver tie clip to hold my red tie to the white shirt that I wore. I was going to my father’s company, I was going to Yuy Corp.
“What do you mean my access is revoked? I’m the heir to this company. You’ve known me for years Sydney. You’ve got to let me in.”
I stood in front of the receptionist in the lobby of the Yuy Corp building. I had known Sydney for the past five years, from the moment she was hired at Yuy Corp, fresh out of college. I had hoped that I would be able to speak with whoever was in charge of the company right now to figure out what was going on. The news had been blasting my father on the air, saying that he was a crook and a criminal, but it sounded like no one had any actual accusations. No talk of what laws he broke were mentioned in any article I could find.
“Shugo… I can’t. I’ll be fired. The new CEO has made things very clear for us… We have to follow his rules or else we’re going to be fired, and I cannot afford to lose this job.”
“I understand… I can’t ask that of you. Take care Syd. I’ll figure things out.”
I turned away from her and began walking away, leaving Syd at her desk, looking down in frustration. As I made my way to the exit, I tried to come up with a back up plan. What could I do now to figure out what happened? Was I really going to have to talk to my father in prison? I hated seeing him and talking to him outside of prison in the first place. Our relationship had been strained ever since dear old Dad walked out on my family. He decided that this company was more important than my mother and my three siblings. Krylanceo, Soran, and Tai had been too young to really get it back then. But me… I was the oldest. I saw exactly what happened.
In my frustration, I almost missed the faint clicking sound of a door unlocking. I looked to my left, and noticed the key panel on a vestibule entrance read “OPEN.” Making sure no one noticed me, I opened the door and entered. It looked like Syd had come through for me after all. I made my way through the vestibule entrance. I couldn’t afford to take the elevator without being noticed. No instead I was going to have to take the stairs, all forty-seven flights up. I moved at a deliberate pace, keeping myself from moving too fast. I was going to need energy in case anything came up. The top floor had always been my father and his closest advisors, but as I reached it, I found nothing but a blank open room leading to the CEO’s office. Two figures resided inside the office, and unluckily for me, three men stood on the floor, walking towards me.
“Stand down. I am Shugo Yuy.”
They kept coming at me. I could tell they weren’t just going to let me stay up here, but I had to talk to someone about this. I had to find out who the people in the office where. I had to figure out who the people. I had to figure out why my father was in prison and if those people had anything to do with. I gripped my fist tightly realizing these men meant to remove me forcefully if I was not going to flee, and the thought of running away in my own company pissed me off.
“YOU LISTEN TO ME! I AM NEXT IN LINE FOR THIS COMPANY AND THAT MEANS YOU ANSWER TO ME!”
I shouted down to the guards standing in my way. It didn’t even phase them. They just looked down at me and stepped towards me. They were hell bent on stopping me from going forward and finding the truth. Fine. I was going to have to go through them.
“I told you all to stand down… But I will NOT grant you the option to hold me back. You have one last chance. Leave me be and allow me to speak with the people in that office, or I will make you leave me alone… Physically.”
When my words still weren’t enough, I completed my resolve to take them down. I wouldn’t attack first. I would let them come to me. As the three guards ran at me, I would side step the punch by the first, duck under the jab by the second, and catch the kick of the third. Yanking on his foot, I forced him off balance and allowed him to fall onto his back. Springing back up to my feet, I raised both hands above my head in an X catch an axe kick to my head in the nook created by my crossed arms. I pivoted on my left foot and knocked my right foot into the man’s standing leg, knocking over a second guard. While I pulled my arms back down to my sides, the third guard shot a straight jab at my face. Unluckily for him, before it reached me, I brought up my right foot since I hadn’t planted it yet, and kicked it at his side forcing him to stumble.
It looked like my attacks had only served to anger the guards. I suppose that’s what I get for holding back. I meant to show them that they didn’t stand a chance against me. I could have continued my attacks while they were on the ground and have an easier time putting them down, but I deemed it too ruthless… too savage. As the first came back at me, I ducked under his punch just barely allowing it to miss me. I grabbed him by his tie and yanked hard pulling him close to me. Grabbing his shirt with my other hand, I would pivot on my foot and use him as a shield for the kick the second guard threw at me. Charging forward, I would use the guard I held to slam the second guard attacking me into the wall. Keeping the second guard sandwiched, I would let go of the first guard’s shirt and throw three hard punches into the first guard’s diaphragm.
I felt something strange, a jolt in the back of my neck warning me of the presence of another. Letting go of the guard, I turned around and noticed the third guard running at me. His right fist was pulled back, ready to launch it once he was in range. Instead, I went low and rammed my shoulder into his stomach. Grabbing him with my left arm, I threw three devastating blows into the man’s left kidney using my right fist. Hearing him cry out in pain, I let go and allowed him to fall to the ground. The same tingling happened once more, alerting me of the second guard that was still standing. As I turned to face him. I threw my left foot into the air, torqueing my body behind it. Before he could catch me off guard, I threw my foot his shoulder, hitting him in the pressure point and forcing him down. I was left standing breathing heavily as I looked down at the three unconscious bodies. Before I could do anything else… I needed to get these men some medical help.
“Well Grandfather what do you think? Too long for my taste, a true berserker would have struck them down when they fell the first time. He should have attacked with impunity when he had the option. But instead he allowed them to stand.”
I turned around to see the two frames inside of the office leave, an old man and younger one looking in his 20s. They looked almost disapprovingly at me, and yet I didn’t recognize either of them. What the hell were they talking berserker? Were they just trying to get under my skin? My eyes narrowed as the older man began to look me over and speak.
“Well now… he is the Noble Brother after all Masahiro. Our Shugo would never attack someone who could not defend themselves. A berserker with a moral code however… that is interesting is it not? What would you say… Grandson?”
“Gr-Grandson? What the hell are you talking about. My Grandfathers are dead! And you… If your name is Masahiro… Does that mean you’re Soran’s older bro-“
“Unfortunately yes. I am his elder brother. I am your elder cousin, and you will show our beloved Grandfather the respect he deserves. Or else I will make you.”
The younger man took a step forward. It was obvious he was looking for a fight. I felt an animosity from him unlike anything else. It seemed like he hated me from every fiber of his being,, and I had no idea why. I had never met my cousin. He had gone to boarding school in Europe… I just knew one thing. If I had been Soran’s older brother, I would have come home if our parents died.
“Masahiro. It is alright. Shugo your father sought to distance you from me. But I swear to you, I am your Grandfather. The same blood flows through us both, as it does Masahiro and Soran, as it does your poor father, who made some unfortunate decisions.”
His words made it seem like he felt bad for my dad… but the tone… the body language. They told a different story. I swear I saw a faint smile on his lips as he spoke. He didn’t give two shits about my father. But he did know why my father was in prison. So I decided to let him keep speaking. After all… I was here for answers wasn’t I?
“What did he do?”
I held my ground and spoke strongly. My Grandfather seemed to almost be enjoying this. My eyes narrowed at him as he began to speak once more.
“My poor poor boy… I did not wish to tell you this way. Your father was making weapons for the military. Illegal weapons. You see… he was conducting human experiments in order to create a bio weapon… A super soldier.”
My eyes widened slightly as I heard what he said. My hands trembled as I listened to my grandfather speak.
“THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER! One that could adapt to any situation! It sounds appealing doesn’t it? The first test subject was a small baby! One that was dying. And they cured him with his serum. They brought that child back to life. The next subject… well he was another child. One who had been in an accident. A boy was hit by a truck while playing one day. He too was brought back to life with an altered version of this serum. These two subjects were known as Project Valor and Project Guardian respectively. We granted them more durable, more powerful bodies. But… it manifests itself in the form of a berserk switch.”
I could just tell my grandfather’s delight as he saw my petrified body. He smiled as he looked at me. My fists tightened as I shook.
“These two subjects… their medical records are sealed… Interestingly enough Shugo… yours too are sealed. I heard you had been sliced and stabbed recently… Tell me. Is there a single scar on your body? We both know there is not. Shugo your father turned you into a monster, a freak of science. But I am here to give you guidance. I am here to give you support. I am here to be the father figure you never ha-“
“Thanks but no thanks. I had the best father figure growing up. My mother raised me and my brothers on her OWN! SHE PROTECTED US AND TAUGHT US RIGHT FROM WRONG! AND YOU THINK YOU’RE EVEN HALF AS GOOD AS HER?! If you really cared about any of us, you would have come when I was a child. No. You’re here for a needless power grab. My father shut down every weapon developing branch of this company when he took over. Not even five minutes after he became CEO, Yuy Corporation had stopped building weapons. THE WEAPONS THAT YOU BUILT THIS COMPANY ON! THE WAR MONGERING THAT YOU BUILT YOUR FORTU-“
Before I could continue speaking, I felt a fist slam into my left cheek. Masahiro had moved up to me lightning fast and attacked. It wasn’t just fast… it was hard. I took a few steps back, coughing as I spat out blood. He did not relent however. Masahiro grabbed me by my hair and began punching my face repeatedly.
“How dare you disrespect our Grandfather?! Take his offer now.”
He would throw me against the wall, kicking me while I was down. Reaching down he pulled me back up before slamming my back into the wall. Once more he began throwing punches at my face as he kept me pinned. This time though… his fists stopped quickly, much to his shock. My left fist held onto his wrist tightly.
“I will never side with you.”
Masahiro tried to pull away, but found my grip only tightening. I stared into his eyes with a glare that seemed to pierce straight through him. My eyes had changed. My pupils had dilated while my irises had grown in size. Instead he attempted to open his palm in an attempt to rush forward and grab my throat. It was unfortunate for him that my grip had cut off the majority of the blood flow to his hand. He was unable to even open his fingers. My head tilted slightly as my eyes narrowed. I looked at him curiously.
“Your brother waited for you. Soran waited for you. You didn’t even so much as call him when your parents died.”
Masahiro brought up his other arm to attack, but was met with me letting go of his wrist and shooting a swift boot to his stomach. The attack sent him clear across the room. I stepped over to him slowly as he groaned out in pain. He would attempt to crawl backwards some as I stood over him.
“Stand up.”
He once more looked shocked. He seemed… petrified? What in the world was he so damn scared of? My hands reached down grabbing him by his suit coat. I pulled Masahiro up to his feet, fixing his coat. I wasn’t one to attack a downed enemy. But now that he was standing… My right fist launched out slamming into his cheek. As his face turned to the left, my left fist rose up slamming into his cheek once more turning it towards the right. He took steps back as I attacked, attempting to get away. I simply followed him as I kept up my assault. Grabbing him by his collar, I threw him across the room. I wasn’t done yet. No. I ran across the room at lightning speed, catching up to his body before it hit the ground. I would throw a strong downward punch at his diaphragm, slamming him into the ground. He curled as what I assumed was pain filled every inch of his body. I turned to address both him and my grandfather.
“Know this. This is my FATHER’S company. You may hold it for now, but I will never join you. Whatever false accusations you have placed against my father, I’ll bring them to light. And in the end, I will send both of you away for a long time.”
I had my answers. That was the end of it. I turned around and walked to the elevator. My sneaking around was over. I pressed the button for the lobby, breathing a sigh of relief. I felt the strange tension in my body leave.
“Well then… how was that for berserker, Masahiro?”
The old man chuckled as the younger one sat up. He wiped the blood from his mouth as he came back to his feet.
“Shugo… He is of no consequence… But those eyes. I would have been able to defeat him if not for those eyes. He glared at me… no it was like he was looking through me. Like I was just… an object… an obstacle.”
“You are just an object Masahiro. An instrument of my plan. And if my plan succeeds, you may become more. So clean yourself up and follow the plan.”
Brrrrrrrvvvvvvttttttt! Brrrrvvvvvvvvtttttttt!
“Grahh… Dammit… alright. I get it.”
