A brand new group is on the making, The Apostles, a Pillar-like group led by none other than our brand new headmaster, Gregoire Girard. A student body that would lead students and enforce the law on this little school of ours. Little is still known about this student body, but who knows? It might just be what the school needs.

A lunch box is seen last Friday, around 12:37:08pm with an encouraging note packed inside. This appalling display that utterly lacked manliness has left many students stunned and outrage, as some decided, after a long while, to speak out against it.

notes here. @tagged words: 145 | Kenji must like asking questions.
Whether that was a good thing or not wasn't for Etsuko to decide. The problem with this question, could only be the fact that she had a hard time coming up with an answer to it.
What do I usually do? Etsuko thought. Nothing good came to mind, for in the few weeks Etsuko's been to PHS, she hasn't done much besides study, read, think, maybe get some private investigations done, and sleep if her mind approves. Maybe, just maybe, Kenji wasn't talking about what Etsuko always does, but rather what she would like to do on a daily basis.
Suddenly, one thing came to mind. "I don't really have much to add on top of reading besides that I go to the nearby cafe often. I'm sure your time spent is much more eventful." Ignorance is bliss |

"I don't know about that..." Kenji rubbed the back of his head with a nervous chuckle. To others in this day and age, a third or so of his daily time expenditures might be considered weird, and while he was proud of his practices, there were people out there who'd give him flak and bug him over it.
"I have hobbies that'd be considered unorthodox or worthless by others. Not that such words stop me, but it does make discussion awkward, you know?" Kenji shrugged, sitting up a bit on the bench and resting his arm on the armrest after verifying that it wasn't sticky or filthy. "I'm a practitioner of the old forms of swordplay, including my ancestor's signature style. There's also a couple of empty hand arts for me to play with as needed. Outside of those, I read, play games, and I'm an avid cook," he concluded with a content smile in regards to his last claim of time-killing.

| Cooking? Ah, yes, cooking.
Thoughts of preparing her specialty in the company of caring others caused Etsuko to drift her gaze into the yonder. "Cooking hmm..?" it had been far to long since she had put something of the slightest decency together for a meal. Etsuko missed the wonderful smell which seemed to bring back unfortunate memories.
Etsuko didn't want to brood over things too long, so she shifted to the next best thing. "Signature style of swordplay? My cl-er, family had something similar." Etsuko was interested in this. Maybe she could take a gander at it in the future?

That farsighted, drifting gaze was one that Kenji knew well. Though she said nothing, he was certain that Pansa was reminiscing over something sparked by his discussion of hobbies. He wouldn't pry for her sake, though, and simply hoped that the conversation wouldn't lull too long while she had her trip down memory lane.
Fortunately, it did not. Her inquiry as to the style and mention of having something similar in her family was a comfortable way to carry on the topic. Kenji nodded, explaining, "The Miyamoto clan is directly descended from Miyamoto Musashi, and I've always found him to be an entertaining person considering the era he lived in, so I took it upon myself to learn his style and go over the Go Rin No Sho. I wish he'd written about firearms as well, just to see what he would've said about them," he noted with a chuckle. Truly, the sword saint discussing guns would've been hilarious, given that he was born and fought through an age where the rifle had overtaken the katana as the preferred method of warfare.

| Fire arms?
Etsuko couldn't let that comment go. "I don't think he would have needed to. Even at the time and peak of the fire arms, swords and other similar weapons have still proved superior on many occasions."
Etsuko recalled doing some research on that subject, as well as applying backpack knowledge in past times as well. Indeed, the katana and wakizashi were useful weapons in past times.
Etsuko would sigh before smiling slightly. "But I agree with your opinion regardless. Might have been nice to have more thoughts on the subject no matter the circumstance."

A seemingly rare smile came at the end of Pansa's own insightful commentary, to which Kenji nodded and returned his own light smile. "The idea of one known for his sword offering testimony on guns would definitely be interesting, but short of borrowing a time machine and asking him to do it - and probably getting looked at funny for the trouble - that can't happen. You're right, in any case, at least by my opinion: guns aren't always the highlight of the day, although with their roles in history, you can see why they rose and advanced how they have. Nagashino, for example..."
Kenji had to stop himself. He realized that he was about to get into a history discussion next. Perhaps the girl before him was also a fan of the past, and judging by her words, that was a possibility, but he didn't know for certain and didn't wish to bore her. So he rubbed his temple with a slightly nervous smile, apologizing, "Sorry... Bad habit."

| Etsuko just brushed Kenji's comment off.
She would give off her usual cool smile as she would look up only with the eyes before shaking her head to the right slightly, moving her bangs to said direction a bit. Etsuko honestly didn't mind his tendencies.
"The great battle of Nagashino. That actually played a role in the founding of my home I hear. It had a great effect on the public." It had been awhile since an event like Nagashino had popped up in every day conversation, so it might be a good refresher to think over it again.Which is just what Etsuko did as she awaited Kenji's reply.

Kenji was relieved that Pansa wasn't bothered by his tendency. If anything, going by her statements, she was drawn in by the topic. Seemed like he was either right, or half-right in his earlier thought process.
More importantly, she'd given the go ahead and shown the interest, so Kenji saw no reason not to continue. Gently, of course. "I was just gonna say that Nagashino was the turning point in how warfare was conducted during the warring states. Instead of single combat between soldiers, the tide turned in favor of mass tactics, particularly those involving rifles. The Takeda cavalry were splendid to be sure, but they only thrived under Shingen. Katsuyori, much as he tried, couldn't compare neither to him nor Oda Nobunaga's insight." He paused for a second, then chuckled again. "I almost sound like an Oda fanatic saying that. If I really had to choose, though, I'm more for Toyotomi or Tokugawa, though I certainly have a soft spot for the Fool."
Moving from his summary, Kenji wanted to now address Pansa's enlightening commentary. The idea that the epic battle at Nagashino had a role in her home was an absolute first that he'd ever heard. He had to know more, assuming it wouldn't be prying to do so. "Still, your home was influenced by Nagashino? That would place it in or around Mikawa, wouldn't it? That's something..."

Although Nagashino was a very important battle in terms revolutionizing Japanese war, there were many who didn't want to accept the change. Warrior's who fought with the blade were now being out-classed and less samurai were being hired.
Etsuko pardoned a small moment of silence before continuing.
Those people all fled to the coast of Mikawa since there was a large body of water for fishing. The village soon and quickly set up barriers, keeping it from the outside world. But...another group fled to that same village for that solidarity as well.
Etsuko would sigh as she leaned back in the bench a little, waiting for Kenji to either comment or ask yet another question. Ignorance is bliss |

Kenji had to appreciate Pansa's insight. It wasn't often that he could sit and talk about his country's history like this with people, because it was an enthralling subject. It wasn't quite a romantic period, at least not as romanticized as a certain Three Kingdoms era, but nonetheless, it held a wide variety of colorful characters, nearly all of whom had descendants in this day and age. He may very well know somebody descended directly from the Hattori clan, or the Maeda, the Oda, so on and so forth, and not even be aware! Even those without a famous descendent, but with roots in the era like Pansa, were of interest. Of course, Kenji was not simply taking such an interest in her because of that; he'd already had it before they came ot the subject of Nagashino.
"Another group? Such is expected when war either displaces nearby peoples, or encourages them to find new homes for any number of reasons. The way you say it, though, leads me to believe that this group was... Noteworthy," Kenji concluded. He didn't want to say they sounded ill of intent or history, since he didn't know exactly what Pansa meant. They could very well be the group she's descended from, so that would be a hell of a blunder. Better to take the safe route until she either offered further details, or requested or initiated a change in topic.

notes here. @tagged words: 195 | "As a matter of fact, it was."
Etsuko would take out one of the two scrolls she kept on her back. After opening the dubious object, it was clear that the scroll was nothing more than a detailed world map. Etsuko would point to area's of interest as she resumed her speech.
"This..clan I may call it, originated from area's in China. Shanghai to be precise. Due to more technical reasons, they were forced out of China, so the clan took a large vessel and used an ocean route to get to Mikawa, where they docked and settled in. Since they felt it was a more closed off place, they decided to build houses and businesses as well, thinking the discrimination would meet it's end.
Etsuko sighed and looked up. 'Many years would pass. But the dreaded problem remained. Soon enough, I was born. By this point, our clan was looked at like tools. Every able bodied man and woman were trained for assassination purposes. And we couldn't just leave either. There was no place to go.
Etsuko decided to give it a small break for a moment. Ignorance is bliss |

That... Well, that was quite a tale.
Kenji pondered the implications of this. From what Pansa was telling him, she was raised amongst assassins, and probably shinobi, too. It was probable that she, too, was one such assassin. That must be why she was reluctant to touch on her past till now; whether she was bound to secrecy, or ashamed of it, or whatever the reason. Still, he saw no reason to judge her harshly for this. He was further intrigued if anything.
"I see..." Kenji confirmed, nodding to himself before glancing back at Pansa. "So your clan's stuck there even now. You said that they were long since trained to assassinate by the time of your birth, so I imagine you were given the same treatment. Both the training, and the stigma behind it. Is that about right?"

Etsuko opened back up her previously bookmarked story as she would continue to talk.
"My parents were sent off to another country for work, so I was protected under the wing of a man by the name of Tenzai." Etsuko would go silent as she began to read, obviously tired of this subject.
She didn't want to go deeper into that story anyway. So Murasaki figured Kenji would figure out some other interesting topic. Ignorance is bliss |
