"What a strange and exciting town!" Marthin thought to himself as he wandered about the tall buildings and unfamiliar people that seemed to swarm around him; each having their own destination. Marthin suddenly stopped, sniffing the air. He looked around, trying to find the source of the heavenly scent that filled the air. As he scanned the street, he froze.
[Sweetie Pie Bakery]
"My, that bakery looks promising!" Marthin made a jolly run for the bakery, barging in. Everyone inside stopped what they were doing. All eyes were on Marthin, and the scene immediately became awkward. Marthin felt a bit intrusive, and stayed silent as he stood in the entrance way. He noticed something--something he loved. "OH JELLY ROLLS!" His face lit up and he danced his way over to a shelf, grabbing a box of fresh jelly rolls with great flourish! He payed the lady at the front desk, smiled, and left the bakery without a word. Everyone looked at each other, obviously confused. As he walked, he imagined what PHS would be like, and how eager he was to meet new people! Marthin's stomach gnawed at him, and he decided to settle at a park to enjoy his jelly rolls. He sat and admired the simplicity of the park, making sure to pay attention to every detail. Relaxed, he knew he would be there for a good while. Just him and the soft breeze--and jelly rolls.

Admittedly, Kenji hadn't satisfied his taste for donuts in a long while now. What better way, he thought, than to check out a bakery that he hadn't visited yet, but had rave reviews amongst his fellow PHS students? None of the notable students, anyway, but one's peers were worth listening to. Or eavesdropping on, if they were less than moral or friendly.
While he had been expecting and hoping for the quality goods which Sweetie Pie was said to provide, he had not been anticipating a bright blonde, fair-skinned teen with a full box of jelly rolls and a noble bearing walking over to the nearby park at which he ate his own proffered pastries in peace. The blonde seemed... Obsessed? No, not obsessed, rather in love with the jelly rolls. How curious and intriguing. Kenji wondered to himself if the teen was an embodiment of certain media tropes pertaining to childish nobles... Well, this assumed that the boy was infact a blueblood of any sort and not simply of such bearing.
Not one to shirk the idea of meeting new people, especially ones who might be quirky and interesting, Kenji stood from his own bench as he finished the second donut in his bag, walking closer from the side. When he was within polite distance, he inquired with a light smile, "You're awfully taken with those rolls, aren't you?"

Marthin was enjoying his jelly rolls when he heard someone approaching. He took his eyes off of the delicacies to see a young man. He must be a fellow student from PHS! He stared for a moment, pleasantly startled. "Well, they are rather delicious." Marthin laughed. He paid close attention to the young man that was standing in front of him. He looked friendly, and overall intriguing. "Silly me... My name is Marthin Vanderbilt, I'll be attending PHS. Are you a student there by any chance?" Marthin smiled invitingly as he held the box towards the young man as to offer a jelly roll.

Kenji too chuckled when Marthin laughed as to the matter-of-fact statement of his rolls' flavor, though said nothing else until the blonde introduced himself - including his status as a 552 student - and inquired as to the easterner's own name whilst making an offering. Letting his smile widen a tad, he accepted a single jelly roll, returning the favor of an introduction. "Kenji, Miyamoto Kenji, and yeah, I'm a senior in 552. I don't subscribe to the student hierarchy or anything though, in case you're younger or something," he concluded with a nod. Although he could very well be the boy's senpai, and him his kouhai, this wasn't Japan, so he had no concern for such things.
"May I join you?" Kenji asked, gesturing with the jelly roll to the spot on the bench next to Marthin before taking a bite out of the pastry.

Marthin was delighted to see that this young man was so friendly. He was also joyed to see that the peer accepted his offering of the jelly rolls. "Pleased to meet you, Mr. Miyamoto." Marthin gave a hardy grin, tilting his head a little. When Kenji asked for permission to join him, Marthin's eyes widened a little in astonishment. "(A stranger wants to join me? My, I suppose my accent and overall appearance isn't as repelling as I had dreaded!)" Marthin thought to himself. "Why, of course!" Marthin patted the empty space on the bench a scooted an inch or two. " He looked up towards the sky for a moment, with a blank expression. He remembered the last words he heard when he was in England:
"In New York, I hope you find those who will accept you and those who will show you the loyalty that you show to all."

Kenji masterfully suppressed a spot of amusement as he clearly registered Marthin's eyes widen, as if he was surprised or shocked. Was he not expecting friendly faces in New York? ...He thought about that mental question for a momemt as the Englishman gave him permission to sit, and realized it was rather stupid. New York was, unfortunately, not a very friendly place on the whole. That aside, he smiled in silent thanks and took the offered space on the bench, not sitting close enough to touch so as to keep things reasonable for their first meeting.
When Marthin looked to the sky, Kenji took the time to ponder. It seemed like he was a little out of sync with his environment as if he were not a native - not that his accent hadn't already given it away - similar to how the ronin himself was earlier this year. What he most likely needed right now were friends and acquaintances before his fellow 552 students gave him a potent PHS welcome, something that he rather hoped wouldn't happen to the boy from across the pond.
Which pond, anyway? Kenji was from another pond altogether, so...
"I take it by your accent that you're from England," Kenji observed, taking another quick bite, chew, and swallow of the proffered roll before continuing with an empty mouth. "Have you been to the US before coming to 552, or is this your first time?"

As Marthin sat, gazing off into the void, he recalled many things of his past, comparing those to the present. New York was a very different from his homeland, and had an overall unfamiliar atmosphere. He snapped out of his daze altogether when he heard Kenji speaking to him. When Kenji assumed he was from England by his accent, Marthin nodded. "Yes, I am from England as a matter of fact! And no, I have never ventured from my homeland. Although it is very exciting to live among commoners." Marthin delicately ran his fingers through his golden hair. He then put his bakery box aside, as it was already empty. "Ah, so satisfying!" Marthin pat his stomach before he pulled a handkerchief from his pocket to dab his lips softly.

Kenji simply watched in suppressed amusement as his newfound acquaintance noted his lack of prior departures from his homeland, and a statement regarding commoners. Perhaps he was a noble in rank, not just bearing. That meant the easterner was on the money after all. His rapid consumption of jelly rolls was less than regal, though, and Kenji found himself looking at the blonde whip out a handkerchief and delicately dab his lips, something he thought he wouldn't see in the modern age. Not strange, but certainly quirky to say the least.
After Marthin's declaration of satisfaction, Kenji chuckled good-naturedly. "An Englishman and a nobleman, I see. I can't say I've met that trait combo in person till now. I really must know, then: what landed you in 552?"

When Marthin put his handkerchief back in his pocket, he smiled a bit. Marthin's attention then turned toward Kenji. Once Kenji had addressed him as a nobleman, he laugh inside. Then came the question as to why he attended PHS in the first place. Marthin's smile then vanished as quickly as it came "Well, you see... I didn't want to be who I was. I wanted to be like a normal, common citizen. I knew I had to get away from my old life--far away. In fact, so far that it brought me over sea. A place where delinquents, or those who ended up here by their own individual circumstances, carve out their lives. I came here to be a simple man, to live my life and pretend that I am a simple man." Marthin put his thumb and index finger on either side of the bridge of his nose. He looked up and met Kenji's eyes again. "Forgive my rambling." Marthin faintly smiled, before falling silent.

"I see," Kenji acknowledged as he nodded at the end of Marthin's explanation, waving off his apology for rambling with an understanding smile. He'd had more than his share of moments where he'd go on a little longer than intended, although those moments were sometimes rather telling, both of himself and of the person whose ear he was making bleed with his words at the time.
"From the sounds of it, you came here to discover yourself anew, not as a nobleman, but someone else entirely. That's my interpretation, at least," Kenji confessed. Though he was adept at reading situations, he could always be wrong. "I rather hope that you find what you're looking for here, whether it's a simpler life, or something else altogether. Me, I can't say that I'm here for the same reason," he stated, chuckling to himself before finishing the jelly roll in his hand.

Marthin was relieved to find that Kenji was forgiving of his accidental gush of possibly uninteresting information. He took a deep breath, examining a diamond ring that was on his finger. "I appreciate your understanding and good wishes, fair friend. I will send my greatest regards to your goals as well, whatever it is they may be." Marthin stopped for a moment, before continuing. "There is one thing I would like to make clear. The life of a nobleman was not an unfortunate one. I'm not complaining or anything of the sort." Marthin laughed, exaggerating the word "nobleman." He then had observed that Kenji had finished his jelly roll, and grinned. "Wonderful, isn't it? Ah, I remember when I used to make these. Dear Mary, they were astonishingly delicious!"

Kenji simply offered a light but grateful smile as Marthin declared to send his regards along. If regards could help him get back to his sisters sooner, he'd take as many as he could get. Then again, if he's meeting people like this quirky Englishman over in the states, he might stay a little while longer, maybe travelling between both countries to get the literal best of both worlds.
Simply smirking at Marthin explaining that he had no complaints as to his life as a noble, Kenji then found his curiosity piqued once again as the blonde mentioned having made jelly rolls before. Somebody had culinary experience, it seemed. "You know how to bake, huh? Perhaps next time, we could trade homemade confections. It's always more fun to cook or bake for somebody else instead of yourself. Particularly younger siblings..." Kenji let the last statement trail off in a mumble as he glanced up at the sky, reminiscing about creating dishes for his sisters.
Usually because they incessantly insisted until he gave in, but there was still love, damn it.

When Marthin saw that Kenji seemed perhaps a little surprised at his experience of baking, he chuckled quietly. He was delighted when Kenji offered to share recipes and such. "Why, that sounds like a lovely idea! I would love to teach and learn such things." Marthin became excited and put his hands together, like one would do during prayer. There was something that bothered him, however. It was the fading of Kenji's words--yes, they seemed familiar. "(He reminds me of myself in that way. A loss, perhaps?)" Marthin pondered on the thought, closely examining Kenji's eyes, his expression, his posture. He wanted to better understand this young man. He thought of a couple scenarios, before scrapping the idea or finding his assumptions increasingly redundant. "You know... I may not be the best at reading others, but it looks to me like you've got something that's on your mind, care to share it with me?" Marthin looked at Kenji with a look of genuine concern, while still having that joyful nature about him.

The young ronin was drawn out of his reminiscence by Marthin making a spot-on observation and asking if he'd share his thoughts. Looking back down at his blonde acquaintance, he scratched his neck and waved it off. "It's nothing bad... Well, depending on your point of view. I was just remembering my sisters. Four of them, all younger than me. The oldest is about a year down, then two years, and the youngest twins are three years. My mother used to make the joke that she was eager to see us, so her and our father kept at it." That particular crack made Kenji laugh a bit, lightening his mood.
"See, my reason for being in 552 is directly related to two of my sisters, Suguha and Marie. It's not a long tale, though I'm afraid it might dampen the mood - or your opinion of me - a bit... If you'd like to hear it anyway, I'm not unwilling to discuss it; after all, you gave me your story, so it'd be fair of me to return the favor." With that declaration, Kenji sat back on the bench and waited for Marthin's answer patiently with that persistent light smile of his.

Marthin sat and listened to Kenji's story, relieved that his assumption was not all correct. He was considerably intrigued by Kenji's reasoning as to why he is attending PHS. He smiled tenderly at the thought that Kenji seemed rather close to his sisters. "Four sisters? Oh my! How interesting... You seem to be very fond of them." Marthin was amused at the thought of what it would be like to have siblings. "Actually. I would find great pleasure in listening to your story, Mr. Miyamoto. What do you say we have a walk while you tell it?" He subtly put his hand on Kenji's shoulder, while trying not to invade on personal space. Rather than that, he was showing Kenji that he trusted him enough to do so, in an attempt to be kind. "Also, I wouldn't worry. I'm not quick to judge, so my opinion of you wouldn't be determined by a simple story."
