Jenesis was sitting on a bench, hands in tight fists as she ever so slowly boiled in anger. In passing, a woman had asked to look after her child for no more than ten minutes while she stopped by her home around the block to pick something up. It didn't seem too fishy at the time, but in hindsight, Jenesis realized that in light of everything with the walls and whatnot, that this was considered a big red flag.
That was four hours ago. Twice, Jenesis and the kid walked to their home to find no one there, while letting other parents in the area know. But now it was getting dark- it was still mid-February which meant the sun went down around 5:30pm-6pm. Unfortunately, Jenesis didn't have the confidence to take care of this kid when it got dark- heck, she didn't even know if she could take care of herself.
Apparently, this wasn't the first child to be abandoned, from what Jenesis heard from the other parents. She knew times were rough, but she couldn't- she just- ... Words eluded her. All the other parents had left an hour prior, but they gave her advice on what to do, and suggested she, herself go home before the sun went down. But Jenesis waited like a fool, believing that the parent would show up- she had to. What parent abandons their child?
...
She wasn't sure how the situation led up to where it did, but Jenesis was now walking to the 'orphanage' that the parents had told her about earlier, with a toddler fast asleep in her arms. The boy wasn't heavy, but Jenesis wasn't strong- she definitely underestimated how heavy an infant can be, especially since Jenesis herself was petite in size.
She stopped when she thought she was at a safe area and crouched down against the wall...and cried. Jenesis was generally a very optimistic person and it was hard to break her spirit, but this- something about this child being abandoned was too heavy for her heart. That, and she was lost and couldn't find the place, and every time she asked for help, she was shunned because people thought she was abandoning her own child. A couple people even had the audacity to shove her away with the boy in her arms.
Eyes red and swollen and desperate for help, she approached another person- the sun was falling very quickly.
"Excuse me- I'm so sorry- do you know where...the orphanage is?"
Her voice was soft. Quiet. Almost inaudible. She was afraid of how this man might react, but she was more afraid of what could potentially happen if the child was in her care when it was dark. She was not strong, and with the boy's weight, she was not fast. She felt responsible for the child while he was in her care, but she knew her abilities and in this increasingly dangerous city, she was simply not strong nor brave enough to protect him.
