[nospaces] [attr="class","biggie"] [attr="class","textie"]They had arrived in San Francisco without a hitch, which was a relief considering how wary they were of the sudden free plane trip out of there. Being presented with a nice, new, durable school and not having so many rules seemingly placed on them seemed... nice, to say the least, but Adrian couldn't shake the feeling that there was some kind of plan for all of the students. Why would they just be forgiven and relocated just like that? It was obvious they weren't fully trusted, but for all he knew, this could all be a part of the Apostles' plan to make them lower their guard.[break][break]
"... Ahh, here we go."[break][break]
A key slid into the door lock, and it would open shortly after, Adrian walking in carrying his bags and holding the door open for Vivi to follow. While the new school had dorms for them, he didn't trust them yet, and he certainly didn't feel safe there, so the two of them rented an apartment together not too far from the school itself. Paying a bit of extra money upfront helped to expedite the process, though he didn't have access to all of his funds for a few days at the least.[break][break]
Once Vivi was inside, he would shut the door and lock it, dropping his stuff in the living room temporarily while he checked all of the rooms to be sure there was no one else was there. His time being on the run made him cautious, and he was relieved to see no one was around. Making his way back to the living room, he would grab his things and look around the house, setting them on one of the tables for now while he began to unzip bags and take some things out.[break][break]
"We made it in one piece. That's a nice start. How are you holding up?" [attr="class","post_box"] [attr="class","tetbox"] [attr="class","intext"] Vivi lumbered into the room, wisps of hair falling out of her messy bun and around her face. Once Valo had shut the door she set her bags down and ran a hand wearily over her face. Currently, she felt as if she could conk out then and there after the plane ride and all the stress of the situation. She’d just left New York and had no idea if Valentine had made it too, or even if the move was just a ploy of the Apostle’s. There was a nagging feeling in the back of her mind that it was probably the case, but still. She was outside of the walls, and going back to school. For now, things seemed to be getting better. “I’m just exhausted. Its hard to believe this is real. I feel like its either a trick or I’m dreaming.” Vivi plopped down on the couch. She pulled her hair out of it’s bun and allowed it to fall around her shoulders.
“I left my weapons and body armor on Helios too. ...Its all just a lot to take in.”
Vivi leaned back on the couch and pressed her palms to her eyes for a moment. She wanted to get her hopes up. She wanted to think that maybe things would get better and she’d have something at least decently closer to a normal high school life. But technically, she’d never seen a time without conflict. It was in her own home as a child, at her boarding school, around when she lived on the streets… and now, ever since she transferred to 552, it seemed like it would never end. Her only comfort at the moment was that she was with Valo. Being near him made her feel a bit safer, and she hoped that maybe tonight she’d be able to sleep. If anyone came after them they’d fight together, and that’s what counted.

[nospaces] [attr="class","biggie"] [attr="class","textie"]Valo listened to Vivi speak, remaining silent as he continued to take things out of his bag. She felt the same as he did, so at least he knew he wasn't just being paranoid. Then again, maybe they both were. But the two of them were now in a city that they had no familiarity with, and were currently a lot less capable then they were back in New York without all of their stuff. At the very least, the both of them were powerful fighters in their own right, but until they felt safe, it was good to be prepared. Right now, they weren't.[break][break]
"We'll be without our equipment for a few days at the least." He said, reaching for another bag and pulling out an orange and a knife. With a quick slice, he'd cleave the orange in two and toss one of the halves to Vivi before he began to peel his half, pulling a piece of the orange off and plopping it in his mouth. "If this is a dream though, hopefully we don't wake up from it."[break][break]
If he was being honest, he was tired of constantly fighting for his life. Tired of always running. Tired of not being able to just live peacefully. Just when it seemed things would get better, they somehow got exponentially worse. This time, it all seemed far too good to be true. But he was hopeful, he wanted this to be their big break. When he looked at Vivi, that's all he wanted was for her to be able to be happy.[break][break]
Sitting on the end of the couch opposite from her, he'd sigh, having forgotten what it was like to relax and take a breather. New York was a hellish nightmare that they had somehow survived, and even though he didn't say it out loud, it was Vivi who kept him going. As long as he had her, he felt like he could keep going. And for now, he wanted to take advantage of this calm to the fullest. He just hoped the storm wouldn't be too far behind.[break][break]
"... We barely got out of there." He would say after a while. He thought he was going to die in the district. In fact, a part of him was set on it when Vivi had disappeared before. He wanted to take the walls down and the Apostles with them, knowing full well the battle would've resulted in his death, success or not. But finding out Vivi was still alive, he started to be more careful. He owed her his life, he just didn't know how to express it.[break][break]
For a while, it seemed like the end of the world. If this wasn't a false sense of security, then maybe they'd have a shot at a new life. A peaceful one. But then, when were things ever that easy? [attr="class","iconie"] [newclass=.biggie]-webkit-transitionduration:.5s;-moz-transition-duration:.5s;transition-duration:.5s;[/newclass] [newclass=.biggie:hover]margin-left:-300px;-webkit-transition-duration:.5s;-moz-transition-duration:.5s;transition-duration:.5s;[/newclass] [newclass=.textie]opacity:0;margin-top:-425px;margin-bottom:150px;width:250px;height:400px;padding:10px;background-color:#fff;border:solid 1px #b7b7b7;color:#939393;text-align:justify;overflow:auto;margin-left:0px;-webkit-transition-duration:.5s;-moz-transition-duration:.5s;transition-duration:.5s;font:11px calibri;[/newclass] [newclass=.biggie:hover .textie]opacity:1;margin-left:560px;-webkit-transition-duration:.5s;-moz-transition-duration:.5s;transition-duration:.5s;[/newclass] [newclass=.textie::-webkit-scrollbar]width:10px;background:#fff;[/newclass] [newclass=.textie::-webkit-scrollbar-thumb]background:#b7b7b7;border:2px solid #fff;[/newclass] [newclass=.iconie]opacity:0;margin-top:-240px;margin-left:-220px;margin-bottom:50px;-webkit-transition-duration:.5s;-moz-transition-duration:.5s;transition-duration:.5s;[/newclass] [newclass=.biggie:hover .iconie]opacity:1;[/newclass] [newclass=.tagsie]opacity:0;font:11px calibri;color:#b7b7b7;margin-top:-75px;margin-left:-75px;margin-bottom:40px;-webkit-transition-duration:.5s;-moz-transition-duration:.5s;transition-duration:.5s;[/newclass] [newclass=.biggie:hover .tagsie]opacity:1;-webkit-transition-duration:.5s;-moz-transition-duration:.5s;transition-duration:.5s;[/newclass]

[attr="class","post_box"] [attr="class","tetbox"] [attr="class","intext"] Vivi caught the orange half and stared at the glistening fruit for a moment as Valo spoke. Only without their equipment for a few days? Knowing him, of course he found a way to bring them over. She began peeling the orange and nodded slowly.
“Yeah… let’s hope we don’t.” She ate a piece of the orange and propped her elbow on the armrest, resting her chin on her palm. “I just want something to go right for once.”
To Vivi, things seemed to have been going wrong for as long as she could remember. Even as far back as being a young girl in the family home, things seemed to go farther down hill at every turn. She remembered as a child, wondering if her entire life was a dream, and if she’d wake up one day to something better. From then on she viewed each time something good happened as coming a little closer to pulling free from her nightmare. A childish concept, but it suck with her. Meeting Valo felt like a big step in escaping. She smiled and ate another piece of her orange when he sat on the other end of the couch.
“… We barely got out of there.”
“Ain’t that the truth,” Vivi chuckled.
During her disappearance, people probably thought she was dead. She really might as well have been, but here she was. Living to fight another day.
“I swear, one of these days we’ll be in over our heads,” she sighed, “So what’re we gonna do about Hyperion?
The gang seemed to be largely regarded as a terrorist group back in New York, and many of their members were gone. If anything, it seemed like a lost cause. But it had so much potential to be something good, Vivi hated to see it die away so soon.

[nospaces] [attr="class","biggie"] [attr="class","textie"]"That makes both of us."[break][break]
Something going right... it'd be a damn miracle. Ever since Riot's first attack, he can't recall a moment that was ever truly right since then. It was always a battle for their lives. How hard was it to just be a regular teenager? Sure, they had the closest thing to superpowers, but it was ridiculous when the next big villain was exponentially stronger than the last. He wondered if it'd just get to a point where they couldn't fight back anymore.[break][break]
Valo looked over at Vivi, taking a moment to just take her in. He wasn't sure when the last time he told her was, but she was more than enough reason to keep going. No matter how bleak things got, she was always there to light the way. He didn't think she quite knew of the impact she had on his life, every single day. They had both come a long way since the start, and all in all, he was happy that she was still here by his side. He would look away, a small smile on his face.[break][break]
As for Hyperion... he wondered...[break][break]
"I think... I think Hyperion is finished." He began, uncertainty in his voice. "I started it with the intention to do so much good for the city, but in the end... I think I failed everyone. I led us all to ruin, and it was a miracle that got us out of the district, not anything I could have done."[break][break]
His voice came out tired and beaten. It was a heavy burden, and in the beginning, he was so sure he was doing the right thing. But he didn't prove capable enough to even deal with Orochi or the other gangs. For all of his looking down on LG, they possessed a stronger strength of will than he did. Maybe it was for the best. "I think... I think Hyperion is finished.”
Vivi blinked and felt her nails digging into an unpeeled section of her orange.
He continued on about the failure of the gang, and she nodded slowly. In her mind, Hyperion was far from a failure. Valo was an excellent leader. It was just the time they had gone through. Vivi would be surprised if most gang leaders didn't feel they were coming short during times of trial. The girl turned to sit so that she faced Valo, and locked gazes with him.
“You didn’t fail anyone, okay? Hyperion gave people throughout the city a sense of purpose, and that in itself was something beautiful,” she said firmly, “Yeah, circumstances made things hard. But even if Hyperion didn’t always succeed, we were another force fighting for a better tomorrow, and the world isn’t short on those.”
Vivi looked down at her lap for a moment, pressing her lips together. She had to convince him not to give up on leading Hyperion. It could still do some good yet.
“We… we could start it over. Try to do better this time. You’re a great leader, you know.”
She spoke with as much gusto as she could muster. It was hard to be confidant, however, when it felt like she always fell short. She always gave it all she could, but fell short again. But perhaps starting Hyperion over with a new fire was a chance to do something worthwhile? Vivi just hoped she could convince him to lead Hyperion once more, but he sounded so broke and finished with the idea.

[nospaces] [attr="class","biggie"] [attr="class","textie"]A sense of purpose...[break][break]
Was it true? Maybe he just never saw it, being at the forefront of Hyperion all of the time. He spent so long pushing himself to be a machine without any emotion, just to accomplish their goals. From the moment Orochi arrived, Valo shut down his emotions and humanity for the sake of pushing forth to eliminate their enemies and protect everyone, no matter the cost. Hyperion served to do the dark deeds that no one else had the gall to do. They do the things they did so everyone else could say they were better than them.[break][break]
Valo stared at the wall ahead of him as Vivi spoke, remaining completely motionless. What he truly wanted was a chance to start over fresh, put the fighting behind them, and live out the rest of their lives peacefully. It was only a year and a half, but it felt like an eternity. A nonstop war that there was no relent from. And knowing their luck, even if they stopped to relax in this city, life would find a way to pull them into another war.[break][break]
He closed his eyes.[break][break]
"Is... Is that really what you want?"[break][break]
Maybe his new view was inherently selfish. He only truly wanted to protect him and Vivi at this point. Maybe it was the fatigue of fighting so hard for society, only for them to treat you like the people you tried to protect them from.[break][break]
"I never had the same driving force that Macht and Leon had. They always seem to know what they're doing with their groups. As for me... I was always full of uncertainty. I was never sure I was doing the right thing. I guess it's what happens when you throw aside your humanity, thinking it's for the greater good. But... Knuckles, and Zoe... I feel like I failed them. And..."[break][break]
He looked at Vivi, trying to keep his voice from cracking, trying hard to prevent the emotion from overtaking him.[break][break]
"I'm scared, Vivi. I honestly am. When we were stuck in the district, I didn't know if we'd ever make it out of there. And I'm scared that someday I'll lose you too. I don't know... if I can handle that." "I think to get that kind of confidence you just have to be prepared to own up to mistakes you make it the future. It’s not easy, but I think it could help. Everyone tried their best to for Knuckles and Zoe. If the combined efforts of some of the strongest five-five-two students couldn’t save them, I don’t think anyone could.
Vivi noticed how still he sat, and what little expression showed on his face. Either he was just really tired and numb, or he was doing his best not to break down.
"I'm scared, Vivi. I honestly am. When we were stuck in the district, I didn't know if we'd ever make it out of there. And I'm scared that someday I'll lose you too. I don't know... if I can handle that.”
Her gaze softened at his words and she nodded slowly.
“I’m scared too. Been scared of life for a long time actually. It’s pretty nasty,” she said, “But think of it this way. We did get out of the district and we’re still alive.”
She paused and took a breath.
“I won’t die. I’ve come this far. I won’t die and leave you alone, alright?”
What was she thinking, saying things like this? She meant it with all her heart, of course, but giving her word that she wouldn’t die on him was... unrealistic. They both knew Vivi had a tendency to throw herself into dangerous situations. With a habit like that, there was a good chance she could die young.

[nospaces] [attr="class","biggie"] [attr="class","textie"]Maybe it was unfair to take all of the blame for himself, but it seemed natural for a leader to do when there were failures. It wasn't just his life on the line anymore. There were dozens of people fighting for a cause that he believed in, a movement that he started. And that's what scared him. If he messed up again, it could have been any of their lives and not just his that were lost.[break][break]
But how could he tell her that he felt like the district even coming to fruition was his fault? Sure, he wasn't there when Luca had killed Zoe and Hyperion was branded as terrorists, but the public still believed it was Hyperion's fault. If he was there, just maybe... maybe he could have done something, anything to prevent any of that from ever happening.
"At least I know I'm not the only one who's scared... thanks."[break][break]
He spoke quietly, but sounding a little more reassured. He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself down. For all of the brave faces he always put up, he was more of a mess than he was willing to admit. Vivi was the one person he ever let see him for how he really was. She was the only one who got to see the human side of him, more often than not. Around her, he didn't feel like he had to be a machine.[break][break]
"We've been through some of the worst things the world has ever seen, and somehow, we're still standing..." He was quiet for a moment before moving his hand to take Vivi's gently, looking down at it as he did so. "No matter what, we've got each other's backs, right? You're... you're all I've got. And I know you care about people, sometimes it feels like you care about them even more than I do. That's why... that's why I know I can't stop you if you set your mind to something. And if I have to, I'd follow you into Hell itself, just to stand by your side through everything."[break][break]
Maybe together, they could find a new purpose. There was a faint ache in Vivi's heart as she listened to his words. He seemed so pained and tired. Yet he still supported her with all his strength. It was clear to her that he really didn't want to lead Hyperion again and part of her felt guilty for trying to get him to take up the responsibility again. It was less pushing him to do it, and more encouraging him and trying to build him up, but still... it felt wrong.
He took her hand, and she smiled, giving his hand a reassuring squeeze.
"That's why... that's why I know I can't stop you if you set your mind to something. And if I have to, I'd follow you into Hell itself, just to stand by your side through everything."
"And that's all I ask..." her voice came out quieter this time, "We really have come through a lot, and I don't think I'd be here without your support. You've always been there for me and I'll always be there for you."
Vivi bit her lip, her heart racing when she thought about what she going to say.
"I don't want to push you to do something you don't want to, but... I don't want us to just be more faces in the crowd when he have such a strong will to make a difference. I guess I feel... kind of called to bring Hyperion back. And if..." she paused and took a breath, "And if you don't feel ready to lead Hyperion again, I'll do it."
...At that point, Vivi had one of those 'Ohp did I just say that?' moments.
She didn't know if she could really do it, but she was willing to carry any burden for Valo. She had a feeling deep down they both still wanted the kind of purpose Hyperion offered, and if Valo wasn't ready to lead again she'd do it until he was ready.

[attr="class","bsmain"] [attr="class","bsimg"] [attr="class","bslyric"] [attr="class","bslmarg"]THERE'S SOMETHING DEEP INSIDE[attr="class","bsltmarg"]THAT KEEPS MY FAITH ALIVE[attr="class","bsbody"]His hand squezed her's gently in return, and he remained quiet as she spoke. No matter where the two of them were, no matter what situation they found themselves in, any place he could find peace with her was home to him. Even in this new city, she was home. And as he held her hand, he looked down at the couch, feeling as though the weight of the world were upon his shoulders. He looked up at her, his mouth slightly agape and his eyes widened as she spoke about taking up the mantle of leadership herself. She was serious... she wouldn't say something like that otherwise. And she had a point, a peaceful life would ultimately lead to them being washed away in a sea of nameless faces. And if they didn't fight, there could be someone getting hurt or killed because of their decision to not act. There were billions of people in the world, but those with power who were willing to do the right thing were few and far between. "Is that really what you want to do? Being a leader is... a lot of pressure." He said quietly, and he closed his eyes before he spoke again. "You have to take the lives of everyone under you into consideration with every single decision you make. Ultimately, you could decide whether they live or die."That's part of why it was so difficult for him to just step up again. He took full responsibility for Zoe, both in her death and in the execution of Knuckles. A lot of lives had been lost in the district, and he felt inadequate to lead when the death toll became too high. Sure, it wasn't his fault completely, but he was their leader. He swore to get them all out of them, and failed. "Even if you do decide to take this responsibility upon yourself... I'm not going to let you do it alone. At the very least, I'll be by your side, backing your every decision and trying my best to guide you along the way. Maybe you can learn from my mistakes. But you're never going to be alone in this, alright?"He felt more comfortable being out in the battlefield with her, rather than living peacefully on his own without her. He was far too terrified to lose her to let her fight alone. If they had to fight, he'd be her's to command, and her sword to strike down anyone who got in the way of their dreams. “Yeah, it is a lot of responsibility. I’ll have to learn to control myself and think more carefully when people’s lives could be hinging on my decisions.”
If Vivi was going to take this up, she probably really would have to do things differently. No more acting on a whim, and she’d had to tone down her recklessness. Not to mention she’d need to learn to employ more tactics, something she didn’t do very often. But with a good drive, Vivi believed she stood a chance at doing well. She was doing this not just to help people in general, but to help Valo.
The whole idea almost made Vivi feel light headed for a moment. She never saw herself offering to do something like this, but somehow she felt called to. After all this time of standing in the background, occasionally leaping into fights just to become another injured soldier… she felt like it was time to try something new and see what good she could bring.
However, Valo’s words were comforting. Even if she did become the new leader, she’d definitely want him to have the second highest position, and she’d probably go to him for advice a lot as she got used to things. Knowing he’d be there was beyond comforting.
“Thanks, Valo,” the corner of her mouth quirked upwards, “Neither of us have to go through this stuff alone, and I’m really glad for that. Hopefully you can help turn me into a leader that does Hyperion justice. I don’t want to disappoint you or anyone else.”
Fear of failure, defeat, and letting others down always loomed over Vivi. And with this, she’d be magnifying that fear several times over. She would have to dismiss it and push through it like so many other things, though. Fear, guilt, pressure, temptation to give up… she’d just shove her way through it, and hopefully be stronger in the end.
