Sarah had some strange music tastes. She figured a lot of people had weird tastes in music, various bands and genres that they could get really hipstery about. Hers was a little bit country, at least it felt a little country. Not to say she liked country just, se really liked a particular song. Birmingham by Shovels & Rope, it felt strangely romantic. Not in a kissing and feeling each other up after weeks of tension was built up kind of romantic so much as the feeling of just leaving and travelling and going from place to place and never quite settling down kind of romantic. The typical road trip kind of romance. Still, ask 95% of teenagers what music they listen to and they'll say 'anything but country'. Sarah's answer would be anything but white rappers. Still, she loved the song and while she listened to it all the time it helped to listen through good headphones. The music store she was in had different albums you could listen to on display and headphones that they were selling that you could plug into your iPod and well, she took full advantage of that. The over ear behemoths were engulfing her sense of hearing while she practically blared the song, singing softly under her breath even though her voice was a bit cracked and smokey. It fit with the song, but she wasn't someone who enjoyed singing or particularly good at it. Hell if she projected she would have been off through at least half of the song. "Pulled her covered wagon off the BQE Said this'll be the last you'll ever see of me Well the cowboy laughed said I know it's not true Cause there's nothing I could do to get loose from you!" While she was listening she lost herself a little and began to sing along as the song got more intense and immediately stopped, pulling the headphones off and setting them down, practically tearing the cord out from her mp3 player and with her face buried in her hands she made her way to a different section of the store to die of embarrassment.

Being the kind of person who had to have some kind of noise in the background when he was doing something, Kenji often found himself looking for new sources of such noise. Youtube couldn't give him everything, after all. Thus he meandered into the music shop, searching for CDs of interest one afternoon. Quietly, he sifted through section after section, stopping at albums that either caught his eye, or that he'd seen before. He lost count of the time he spent in the comedy section alone.
Over the din of the pop song droning on from the speakers above, Kenji's ears perked as he overheard someone singing in the next aisle over. The country aisle, to be specific. He poked his head over and saw a fair-skinned young lady with red tresses donning the store's name-brand testing headphones, running through a country tune in a manner that struck Kenji as being lost in the music, completely unaware of all that was going on around her. Though far from a perfect singer, and her voice cracking now and again, it was hardly an unpleasant tune, nor an unpleasant sight, if he had to confess.
As the intensity of her fervor peaked, the girl seemed to realize her fault and hastily discarded the headphones, concealing her face in her hands as she left for another part of the store. Kenji chuckled quietly to himself; such a scene had happened with one of his little sisters before, only there were a fair few more people around to overhear and witness it. This girl must be dreading what she just did, even though there was hardly anything to be ashamed of. Seeing as he had time to kill anyway, Kenji followed the girl to her new destination, which coincidentally was the comedy section he'd come from a little while ago.
"You know," Kenji began, half-perusing the stocks once more, and half-glancing in the red-haired girl's direction to be courteous. "I have a sister who did that once with a rock song. Her face turned at least nine different shades of red in two seconds flat when she figured it out. Good times..."

"That's sweet of you to try and make me feel better," Sarah said through her hands, the sound slightly muffled but still pretty easy to make out unless someone had some sort of processing issue. "But at least it was a rock song for her... she's probably pretty young too..."
She lowered her hands and looked up to the boy who had been speaking to her. They were... the same height? He seemed kind of nice, had sort of a sweet look to his face. Maybe he worked here, or maybe he was just trying to hit on her. She wasn't sure either way but she decided to give benefit of the doubt for a little bit at least. "Did your sister also happen to have as bad of a singing voice as me? Maybe a little bit worse? Tell me it was worse than mine... I'm so embarrassed."
She tugged gently at her hair and looked down toward the ground, noticing that most peple had stopped staring as much though a few still would chuckle quietly whenever they looked her way. "I uh, I'm Sarah. You really don't have to make me feel better. I'm mostly okay, there are tons of other music stores in the city so I'm sure I'll find somewhere I can feel comfortable showing my face again." She gave a half-hearted smile. Maybe that would sate this boys need to feel like he had done the right thing, she didn't want to waste his time or be a drag.

"To be honest, it was a busy store, and there were at least ten strangers in the same aisle. You probably have more luck than her, and perhaps a better singing voice than she did; she was ten at the time." Laughing again, in part at the memory and in part at the comparison, Kenji waited around as she looked up, meeting her pretty sky blue eyes with his own dark brown ones. It clicked with him, probably at the same instance as it did with her, that the two were of identical height. Considering Kenji was used to craning his neck down for a lot of girls back in his homeland, it was a welcome change, and one that accentuated her attractiveness.
Listening to the girl - Sarah - run through her introduction, Kenji nodded and offered his own smile, shoving a hand in his pocket and letting it sit. "My name's Kenji. I'm glad you're okay, though I'm sorry if you feel I bothered you or anything." That much was true; though his intent to cheer her up a bit was genuine, he knew well that someone might not care for that sort of interaction. Luckily, it seemed like Sarah did. He decided that as long as she wasn't opposed to conversation, he'd chat for a bit. After all, he enjoyed making new acquaintances and friends. Thus he changed the subject, inquiring, "You wouldn't happen to be a student, would you? I've been shipped off to 552. I... Well, I don't think I fit in all that well with their crowd, you know?"

"I am actually. We are going to the same school I guess," She answered, a little comforted by his comments about his sister. Still, she had license to be a little embarrassing as a ten year old, but childhood embarrassments were still pretty bad so at least she wasn't alone. Somewhere, somehow, someone else knew her pain. "I am pretty new there too though. It's actually my first week since the move. I haven't been to New York at all either so this is kind of a strange thing for me."
"And really you haven't bothered me. I'm just a little self conscious I guess. I feel kind of stupid." She reached over to a few albums and started mindlessly flicking through the cd's and looking at various album covers for bands she hadn't heard of. A few of them were familiar though, like when she came across a Nirvana album cover with the baby and the pool and the money. "I moved here from Kentucky, just on the outskirts of Ft. Campbell. Kind of close to Tennessee and all that."
She looked over to Kenji, "So how about you Kenji? Are you from New York or were you shipped here from a little further out?" The phrase shipped made her think he was from somewhere further away but she didn't want to assume.

Kenji was relieved that he hadn't bothered Sarah, though he kept that to himself to avoid sounding odd. Instead, he quietly and attentively listened to her detail where she came from while sifting through a few CDs, stopping for a moment when he came across a Lewis Black album he didn't have. That one would be coming home with him today.
The conversation soon came to where Kenji came from. Shaking his head at the New York remark, he explained, "I come from further out, yeah. I'm from Japan, born and raised in Hyōgo prefecture, though I've been across the country. Still getting used to New York, even after two or so weeks of being here, but I'm managing pretty well." For someone who's a native of Japan, he speaks fluent, clear English, as if he'd been speaking it for most or all of his life. There was the expected slight eastern accent, but if someone wasn't looking for it, it was almost as if it didn't exist.
"I'll admit that I'm curious about your circumstance," Kenji commented as he sifted through a few more albums, figuring he could at least be honest without offending Sarah, "being sent to 552 and such, but I'm not planning on prying if you're uncomfortable talking about it. At any rate, it's nice to meet you; I haven't made a lot of peoples' acquaintances since I got here, so it's a good change of pace." At the end of that statement, he returned his gaze to Sarah and smiled once more, emphasizing that fact.

"Japan huh?" She had never been there. She knew that her father had been stationed there once upon a time way before she was born and obviously before he had passed away. "I can imagine that's kind of a big move." She gave an apologetic smile but listened to him talk. She wasn't about to tell him anything about her life. That'd go over great, plus she wasn't ready to accept some of it yet.
"I'm not comfortable talking about it to be quite honest. No offense or anything I just like to keep certain things kind of private you know? The most I'm comfortable with is just saying where I'm from for now." It wasn't that big of a thing, I mean it was but it wasn't? Far worse had happened but the point was it was hers to tell if she wanted and hers to tell if she didn't. She didn't have control over much in her life but that was something she had power over and she would exercise that power if given the opportunity.
She stopped sifting through albums. "I could use some air. I mean this place is nice and all but I'm getting a little cooped you know? I need to feel a little more free and stuff. I'm gonna leave, wanna walk with me for a little?"

"Definitely a big move. Before this, the furthest I'd gone had been the east coast of China," Kenji confessed. China was nice, though he'd wished he had the opportunity to go to many key places, particularly the grave sites of various warriors from the Three Kingdoms era. But there was no need to bore Sarah with that.
As for discussing her reason for being in 552, Kenji simply nodded in response. He'd already stated that he had no intent to pry if she had no desire to explain, and so he would honor his word. Moving along, Sarah mentioned that she could use some air and invited him to accompany her. Offering another smile, he returned the Lewis Black DVD. "Sure. Shall we?"

"Yeah," She made her way out of the place and started slowly walking along the sidewalk and up the block. There was a pizza place not too far from here and she had a couple bucks in her pocket. She could manage to get a slice of cheeze pizza and walk while eating since the place had a walk up window for passerby's. "I've gotten pretty familiar with some of this area. My mom and me live in an apartment not too far from here. Kind of a shitty place but you live where you can you know?"
She pointed up ahead in the direction of the pizza place, "There's a place called Rico's up here that does slices for pretty cheap. It's a little greasy but not as bad as like pizza hut, you know? Plus they are those big folding slices. We don't get them like that in Kentucky. I'm gonna get a slice but I don't have to go in. Have you seen any of the parks or anything around here?"
She was looking for distractions and the company was appreciated. Usually she did this kind of thing on her own but having someone to talk to was a welcome addition for sure.

Kenji quietly listened to Sarah talk about herself and the big apple, nodding along at her posed question. As she pointed to a pizza place up ahead, he glanced over at it. Looked like a hole-in-the-wall joint, probably popular with people who grew up in the area, or so that was his first guess. Not that he had a problem with hole-in-the-walls, of course. Food was food, and good food was even better.
Sarah asked after his park experiences, to which he shrugged. "Mm, I've been to a couple parks, though I haven't seen Central Park yet. Just haven't gotten around to it. Aside from 552, I haven't been anywhere major; most of what I've been doing is learning my way around the city and finding good spots for this or that..." He paused in his speech as his stomach whined, having had a delayed response to the mention of food. Rubbing his neck, he chuckled nervously. "Now that you mention it, I could use a bite myself... I can cover my pizza."

"Good deal, cus I sure as hell can't pay for both of us." She pulled the crumpled bills from her pocket as she got in line. "I've always wanted to go to central park, but more than anything I'm just disappointed that Central Perk isn't a real thing. Oh, uh. Have you seen much american tv? There's a show called friends that takes place in a coffee place by that name but it's fictional. I just kinda always hoped the place was real for whatever reason you know? Like that I could just go there and get coffee where some of the tv characters did. Plus the name is a nice pun."
She talked enough that the line moved and she got to the front pretty quickly, "Just one slice of cheese please and thank you!" She put the crumpled bills on the table and gave a smile as the slice came her way. She grabbed a few napkins and moved slightly to the side and began patting the napkins on the top of the pizza to soak up some of the loose grease. She would wait until Kenji had gotten what he wanted, "I kinda want to explore it. Like, not today but in the future. It seems like a cool place to play hide and go seek or tag. Chasing games are kind of fun as adults when you have huge areas like that."

Kenji suppressed a chuckle as Sarah went over Friends, a show he was well aware of. Thank god for international television and the internet. At the end of it, he nodded in confirmation with a slight grin from holding back laughter; it wasn't uncommon or rude to think someone from one country hadn't heard of another country's media, so he didn't judge her for it. "Yeah, I've seen Friends. Perhaps when you've graduated, you can open up a real Central Perk and fulfill your hopes?" It was a half-joking suggestion, but he didn't know whether Sarah would actually do something like that or not. They'd only just met, after all.
That said, Kenji waited for Sarah to take her order, then stepped up after she'd gotten her food to step up and put in his request. "Could I get a slice of pepperoni, please?" He withdrew his money and paid up, then waited the brief time for his slice to come, similarly dabbing his down to degrease it once he discovered how oily it was, hoping that the proprieter wouldn't take offense. After that, Kenji rejoined his newfound acquaintance and listened to her desire of exploration. He took interest in the idea of adult hide-and-seek, and laughed a little, not to demean Sarah, but in agreement with her thoughts. "Definitely. The bigger you are, the bigger the playground you should have to run around in. Have you ever just hid in a forest with a bunch of people? It's ridiculous fun, some of the places you can find to duck into, and just in time for whoever's 'it' to completely miss you. On top of it, you've got a beautiful, natural backdrop for your game, so it's double the value for one place."

"That's true. It'd be nice to do that sometime with a big group. I don't know nearly enough people to orchestrate that but I'd be really into it if it happened." She took a bite of her pizza, finding the cheese a bit stubborn as it stretched and stretched before finally breaking. She covered her mouth a little as she chewed the bite and swallowed, wiping her face with the base of her thumb before finally being able to talk again. "It'd be a lot nicer than trying to kill each other or kick each others ass that's for sure. It'd be a good way to let off some steam."
She walked a little further, seeing something in the crowd ahead that had her a little upset. It wasn't a big deal but having seen her mother deep in the crowd she decided to take a turn through an alley. "Hey let's take a shortcut." She didn't really have an end destination but it was a shortcut to the quickest place away from where she had seen her mom. It was daylight hours which wasn't good, usually her mom didn't go out in daylight because of hangovers. What was she doing? Why was she out there?
"So, did your family come with you? Or are you staying in the dorms?"

Attentively listening and eating at the same time, Kenji appreciated the conversation that was being had. Sure, they were ultimately talking about childish things, but there wasn't anything wrong with that. When Sarah brought up the difference between hide and seek and the typical activities of NYC, he nodded with a grin. "Yeah, there's usually a lot less blood and fewer bruises involved with hiding and seeking, and works about as well to destress you. Of course, you're gonna get those overly mature kids who think they're too old for that sort of thing. Everything's gotta be solved with violence, right?"
Almost out of nowhere as they were coming toward a crowd, Sarah apparently decided to lead him off the streets and into an alley. Kenji concealed his apprehension, because while she didn't seem like the type to lure someone into an ambush, the fact remained that the two were barely acquaintances at this point, regardless of how well they were getting along. Still, he obliged and joined her on the trek through the alley.
The conversation continued in short order, Sarah bringing up his family and living space. He shook his head on both accounts, then detailed his circumstances while maintaining a level of vagueness. "Neither, actually. I'm living in an apartment suite; my family's all back in Japan. I've earned enough money in my travels to manage that much."

"That... that must be nice." She didn't want to talk about it more because already she was feeling an uncomfortable amount of jealousy. She wasn't sure if she wanted to continue talking about any of this stuff. All the things that talked about were starting to make her uncomfortable and then she saw her mom, and now all of this. It was like she wasn't meant to have any sort of good time today and it was really starting to fuck with her.
"I have an apartment too." She didn't say who she lived with or anything else on the matter. Instead she turned her attention ahead where the alley opened back up in the next street over, a small playground was placed between two buildings, the place seemed vacated so she made her way over toward it to sit on one of the swings. "I dunno, it'll still speak out to the competitiveness in a lot of them I think. A lot of the fighting stuff seems to stem from a long line of dick measuring contests after all. Just say whoever wins is a total badass and king of manhunt or whatever tough name it can go by instead of hide and seek."
