Work sounded like a nice and good idea but to be honest it was little more than troublesome, mindlessly, time consuming practice for the rest of your life. That was the idea that Raphael had situated in his head he didn't want to work after-all he was just a kid stuck in the renditions of childhood still to be had, his mother had a decent job anyway that was keeping them afloat for the past couple years to be burdened with the copious amount of hours he'd lose to work hours how was he supposed to get stronger to match in school?
With a number of applications out he'd have little more to do than sit back and wait although with the hours stacking up his lazziz-faire outlook on the matter eventually stacked up to dreading the soon to come interview laying just out of sight. Was he composed enough? Dressed for the job? What would it entail when he eventually got into the ritualistic repetitive service of everyday? Would he be able to handle it? Or worse yet handle it far too well that he'd grow bored of it? The latter being the least of his concerns now but with the ever lapsing days he'd learn all too well just how dull it could transition to.
Before too very long a promising opportunity emerged drawing his attention eagerly. With a rising jolt out of bed, Raphael would dress his best for the opportunity, albeit a bit still requisitioning to his own style. Battered white shirt, loosely revealed by his open-hanging blue suit jacket, a pair of matching blue slacks just short enough to reveal his hiked up black socks and shiny shoes. He felt clamped up and out of place behind this facade it wasn't him but as soon as he approached the mirror he couldn't help but feel.... good.
Straightening out a tie and attempting to tie it on right he'd march out the door and propose the swiftest route to his soon to be employment. The "Ice Palace" as it was dutifully called was located on the outer broaches of town was the first tolerable locale he'd received word from, feeling out of place and under appreciated from any other entry-level employment opportunity he'd opted for this one feeling as though it had an appeal that only a few could really scoff at.
A step in the doors would bring a brisk chill up Raphael's back, he'd been brought up in the north but that'd been years ago as it were he was used to basking out in the sun and otherwise a greenback to this unwelcoming environment. Brrr. Hands brought up to his forearms massaging them quickly before pulling up his collar to conceal his neck from the climate. A few careful steps would find him outside the box office hovering just before the door with an enclosed fist to knock. Before wrapping his knuckles against the door a lanky man would open the door, his body veiled in a light hockey jersey he would hardly be described as professional or warm for that matter. Raphael would shiver once again coldly taking in that the man had been better conditioned for this environment than he himself.
"Cold?" The man offered warmly with a cocked half-smile seemingly enjoying Raphael's weary perspective.
"Yeah, I'm uh not so used to this, call me a pansy." Raph would offer up a sheepish, self-demeaning laugh to try and be chummy with the man. Always a good start to get a laugh, be humble yeah that was the plan. The man would exchange a less than amused look in return shifting downwards towards his chair and offering up one in return although Raph's own didn't have a back side to it.
Hesitating for a moment as how to approach the obstacle he'd move into the chair awkwardly mounting it and maintaining his back upright to show good posture just like his previous teachers had administered. It showed respect and attention, wanting to give off the best appeal to his new boss.
"Well all this looks good," Larry, the manager would say pulling from his desk an application form and reading it over with a skimming glance. "You do know that this is primarily a custodial job correct? Which means that you'll be doing a lot of work with your hands."
Perfect. Raphael thought to himself. That was just about the route he'd expected, although he held out hope that there was a chance at something more colorful to his resume than picking up trash. Hella good start there.
"There's also opportunity for advancement if you need it."
Raphael would perk up after hearing that, though at the time not entirely sure what he meant by that, perhaps some role in management, or some sort of office work. It did manage to have some sort of appeal to it after all. Before long he hoped he could come to work as nonchalant as this fellow, once further looking at his own appearance and coming to a soft blush in return, Raphael looked a tad bit stuffy for wares by comparison. A puff to his attire and he'd retain his upright position. His back beginning to ache from the torturous discomfort of the chair's missing back. Perhaps this was something outside the realm of what normal test-ees had to endure, maybe it was a test. That's right Raphael could reason that this guy had already approved all trainees and merely exposed them to a test of might, that they could hold out against his torturous advances.
Biting his lower lip briefly and with renewed vigor he'd chasten himself upright a bit more in control of his dull pains and resuming with the interview at full force.
"So what can I expect to get out of working here? I mean if I were to be so bold about advances this early into the running." Bam an aggressive throw, Raphael perked up a bit of a smirk. This was by all accounts just like a fight, exchanging pulls and throws to overcome the other with ones discussion. Call it a hail marry but he was looking for the best sort of deal he could ask for out of a first job experience.
Larry resulted in a smirk, he seemed to either like Raphael's determination so early in their renditions or quickly became vexed by the fact that he'd have to delve out money to an unpracticed serf who by all accounts could turn out to be a disappointment in the bigger picture of things. All the same he never seemed to let down his facade retaining that cool sort of appeal to himself.
"Well I can only put you in at about base payment for the time being but within a couple months, that being three or more we can talk about how much you're putting in here and we'll talk about a raise. From there on out its all a matter of how much you put in." Larry smirked still keeping his eyes peeled on Raphael's beady, rouge expression as the words hit the boy.
Three months, in retrospect that felt like forever but Raphael knew just how quickly time like that could fade. Cleaning up stuff for three months, putting his back into things for extra moola, yea that sounded like a good exchange of services but still he wasn't entirely sure of what he was getting into. Appeal still a twinge of red he'd halfheartedly nod with faux excitement ultimately not wanting to work but putting this effort in if only for his mother's sake.
"Sounds more than amiable, when can I start?"
A hearty laughter would erupt out of Larry's chest in a moment that would put Raphael to a moment of shame mixed with confusion. Raph wasn't so sure if he was being made fun of or he'd made a joke. The contemplative struggle of it inevitably going through his head in an instant leaving him there willing to stammer out some sort of safe word to save him from this unmoving struggle. "Not so fast there kiddo," Larry would linger on his laughter a bit. "I do appreciate the eagerness, I really do, in fact I wish half of my hire-ees had the same quickness about them to take on this job." He'd nod stroking his goatee for a moment considering the thoughts. "Let me give you a quick tour though first, see if you still like the place."
Larry would slowly rise from his seat taking but a moment to shuffle his application paper in before settling it aside. He'd come to a stand and briskly stroke his beard and with the same motion stride across the room. Raphael would watch nervously at first not quite sure what to do with himself, his body hot and paralyzed a bit from the stress of the situation. It wasn't as though he was scared of the man he was just nervous about making a good impression on his first interviewed day. The man Larry would gesture with a bob of his head motioning Raphael to follow, with long strides the pair of men would move across the cold foray stopping off first at the rental station. Raphael notably a few steps behind would stop a second later waiting patiently.
"So for the most part we'll have you hear during public sessions, once you have a little more training under your belt we can move you to the register or...wait." He'd stop suddenly furrowing his brows straining to think, "Can you drive? I mean got a licence and everything?"
Rapahel would shirk away momentarily as a low drone played off in the background and the Zamboni passed their peripheral vision in the background. He wasn't confident he could handle such a hulking machine much less he didn't think he was ready. A nervous gesture he'd gulp pulling out his licence and showing it to Larry a bit nervously now.
"All good, you can put that away." The man would say with a chuckle.
The pair would depart shortly just the same to be shown about the room. Raphael nervously taking a glance at the other workers standing behind counters all following him with cautious glances. The eye patch didn't necessarily do him any favors here as they shirked away and considered him a threat of some sort. Larry however didn't even seem to notice the worthwhile scars Raphael was sporting. Which only happened to make him more nervous.
"For the most part its a simple job, show up on time, do what people need you to do. Time to time I'll have little side projects to work on." Larry would smirk quietly to himself clearly preoccupied with a number of things all the while putting up with Raph.
Before long Raphael was drafted back to the Zamboni room watching the man behind the wheel pull in slowly, the crunching and churning of mechanics playing into place before he'd hope off. A simple smile and a nod was all he'd be granted before the guy went hurriedly to work. It didn't seem like a frenzied pace in fact it was by all accounts quite the opposite taking everything in stride like there actually wasn't very much to do. That was perhaps the most surprising notion to get under wraps for Raph seeing as any other job he'd worked he was constantly at arms with something to do only to find safety in the slow parts of the day. But this man before him seemed to be composed of such instances.
"How's it goin man?" The bearded man would gesture pulling the machine in fulling and bounce off to slap Raphael's hand in a shaking gesture. "Name's Nikko." He'd seem a mixture of terrifying and overly hospitable like a man from the mountains.
"Nikko's our head Zam driver, if you're lucky he'll get you all trained up to snuff in no time."
"Uh cool!" Raphael would respond not entirely sure how to very well respond frankly he was suffice to say overwhelmed.
"And that's about it kiddo, come back tomorrow and we'll have you in the thick of it."
With a number of applications out he'd have little more to do than sit back and wait although with the hours stacking up his lazziz-faire outlook on the matter eventually stacked up to dreading the soon to come interview laying just out of sight.
