Siobhan probably wasn't the ideal girl. Not saying she had a horrible personality but everyone here at PHS had a past. No matter how beautiful or how elegant or civilized they seemed everyone had a story. Seeing how she was Shouyo guessed she had to be raised upright since she was a child. Maybe an heiress or a daughter who couldn't stain the family name who knew. But her facial expressions changed with every little action Shouyo took or words he spoke. When he would say something her face seemed to disagree with him. Maybe they should, Shouyo didn't know anything about her. Who knows what her past holds.
But as he turned from the window to look at her letting the cigarette burn on its own she was still, entirely human. Maybe he's begun to be immune to everyone's past. Who they are what they've done. Once you walk around the school once you've heard it all. Certain moments like these were rare. And these moments prove that although everyone might have a story good or bad, we were all still here, together. They were still just kids in high school, trying to make grow and make it on their own. It seemed as if, for once, the world was alright, and wasn't against them.
Shouyo's eyes widened and he went into a coughing fit as he choked on his own spit trying to comprehend her words. Him a prodigy? A big fat NO. At least that what he yelled into his own head. Shouyo composed himself and fixed his glasses. Scratching his head he searched for the best words. A way to disagree, but not like last time where he called her a liar.
"No...... I'm really not, that was all just.... a fluke. I'm not a prodigy at all. Not really good at anything."
He could say the same for her though, who could change the tides within a song like that and convince a partner to do the same without words, with just the sounds they could create, to try and evoke a message.
"I'm sure you're the real prodigy between the two of us."
He wasn't only talking about the piano. It didn't mean much but Shouyo did think she was probably great at things besides the piano. He could only guess but in his head she was probably someone, from a bigger world then he was. Bigger and darker.

"No...... I'm really not, that was all just.... a fluke. I'm not a prodigy at all. Not really good at anything."
Ah, there it was again. Siobhan frowned lightly to herself. Just when she thought that her playing might have broken down the barriers around his denial Shouyo turns around and is trying to hide back in that frozen cavern. Siobhan was aware that her playing had moderately melted those barriers, but even so she couldn't have expected to destroy them utterly. Well, she did expect it, but that wasn't too realistic. Siobhan gave him a soft bemused look, just letting it go, figuring that words were not a way to get through to him. Shouyo was an artist after all, the best means of communication would be through playing.
"I'm sure you're the real prodigy between the two of us."
Taking extreme care to not let the brunt of the words show outwardly, Siobhan just waved Shouyo's words off. The word prodigy left a very bitter and sallow taste in her mouth. Being called a "prodigy", was how her life had somehow wrapped itself up in this mess. She wouldn't be at disciplinary school if she wasn't a "prodigy". Siobhan wouldn't have been put through repetitious suffering if she wasn't a "prodigy". Turning her head from the darker thoughts, she opted to correct Shouyo in his assumption. Even if she didn't believe so, convincing him of his own talent was more important to Siobhan than brooding over her own troubles.
"Me? Shouyo you can't lie, your playing says it all. Even if you want to deny that, someone like you can't have an existence plagued with being a burden. I'm sure there are multiple things you can do."
Giving him a small smile in return to her statement, Siobhan sat up from where she was rested on the chair. Briefly her eyes were caught on the smoldering cigarette and that didn't sit well with her. Crap did she do something? Running the conversation through her head, she wasn't picking up anything. Are we seeing something differently here? No, Siobhan was looking into it too much. Giving out a tentative suggestion to quell her rampant thoughts, she gave him a bit of a confused look.
"Uh, you're cigarette's burning away by the way..."

A slight unpleasant look appeared on Siobhan's face. There it was again. Even when he wasn't trying to he would always make people uncomfortable like that. At this point it was just a part of his personality. Nothing he could do about it. Usually people would take it badly and just move on with their lives leaving him behind. She lingered next to him though, maybe thats where this feeling of guilt was coming from. He continually disappointed a person who would stay here at least for this moment no matter what problematic things he said. But in his mind these were just truths.
Just like he did Siobhan didn't seem to like the term or name of prodigy. Her reason's probably a lot different then his. Seeing her reaction and change in air he felt a little bad again. He didn't mean it rudely, she just really was something else compared to all the other kids he's met around classes. Or skipping classes. Maybe being a prodigy comes with cons, no it does come with cons. Expectations, harsher upbringing so much more. A little ounce of talent then boom all the spotlights are on you. He remembered, seeing the eldest of his family suffer quietly because of his "potential". The pressure was undeniably heavy.
"...... but thing is.... you really don't know me.... no I didn't mean it like that... but.... I don't know you either. I haven't really been a real good luck charm to anyone around. I haven't really done much in my life either. There are things I can do. But so can others. Probably better. That's why i don't think being particularly even slightly good at something... is that big of a deal."
In actuality he didn't want to be noticed at all. If he could he just wanted to remain invisible and sleep away, keep away from people. Not that he hated people but people just tended to dislike him, so to keep things simple he stayed away. He didn't think any of his words were all that bad. Just things about him. Shouyo looked down at his cigarette and took one last hit before crushing it on the bottom of his shoes and throwing it out the window.
"Well that's my reason.... what about you?"
Being called a prodigy, why was she avoiding it so much? He wasn't trying to pry but she seemed convinced he was one for some odd reason. In a way not knowing would probably be better, less energy consuming. Shouyo sat on the ground and lit another cigerette.
"You don't have to answer if you don't want to. I don't care for things people want hidden unless I'm getting paid..... We all got our pandora's box. But I do think you are different."

Now Siobhan felt guilty. Shouyo was right, she didn't know him and it was presumptuous to assume that he could take the pianist world by storm. She hadn't truly considered his own reasoning to be against it. Siobhan assumed he had good intentions by calling her a prodigy, but that was something she referred to as a burden. Maybe it was the same for him. Even so, the louder parts of her still protested against his negative look towards himself. Shouyo, who's music was enough to move one to tears, could not be average. It wouldn't make sense.
"Well that's my reason.... what about you? You don't have to answer if you don't want to. I don't care for things people want hidden unless I'm getting paid..... We all got our pandora's box. But I do think you are different."
Siobhan waited until he was settled down and had lit up another cigarette. Had she considered him someone she would later have to trample on, maybe she might've pursued his hinting at being a potential information broker. But Siobhan didn't want to view him as someone like that, even if it came back to haunt her. She had a vague realization that she was different. It didn't take a genius to realize that when a twelve year old was given the job of assassination, they just might be different than your average pre-teen.
"There's not any particular reason. When an animal is shocked for crossing its boundaries, eventually it fears crossing those lines. I guess the same could be said for me. When you're called a prodigy it's not a gift anymore. It's a curse."
It was the only reasonable answer Siobhan could find. How could you consider counting all the incorrect math problems on your paper to give you the total hits you'd have to take a blessing? She didn't understand it. Why did she, a prodigy, have to suffer for her natural talents. What if she didn't want them in the first place? It wasn't like she enjoyed creating relationships just to tear the person apart later. Being a prodigy brought her nothing but pain and anguish. It was a Pandora's box ripped from her hands to which everything escaped. Including hope.

Bitter words began to linger around him. If only the sounds of the piano could resonate for a longer and continue to ring even if the waltz had ended. It was the only thing that could fill the void of silence and keep what was good alive, even for a little while longer. He wasn't so sure why she could continue to see him in a bright light. maybe it was the same with how he viewed her. But he could see the potential darkness that lived on within her shadows. An odd pair of people, stuck in a room with only the music of the past to keep them going.
Her reasons were just as vague as before. But this time a little more hint. A curse? He was sort of right then. Whether his guesses were wrong or right he didn't know for sure. He didn't want to rely on his assumptions but those were the only things he could go on. A gift to a curse. The title of prodigy has long weighted on her this whole time probably. Shouyo took the cigarette from his mouth and watched the smoke escape.
"An animal can adapt. Once you fear crossing it they can just go around it and find another way. You're brilliant. I can tell."
Shouyo continued to smoke, his eyes shifted from the smoke to the dust that flew around only visible through rays of sunlight that shined through. He leaned back and closed his eyes, what a day. He was getting comfortable, ready for another nap honestly. He should but, it was just so nice.
"If you were to kill me I wouldnt mind. Even then I would think you were brilliant."

Siobhan wondered if she was just too narrow-minded to understand Shouyo's words. How could an animal forced into submission and have the ever-present fear of its boundaries ever hope to somehow find freedom? Was that meant to be a metaphor. Siobhan figured she was thinking into it too much. Shouyo's words had most likely been meant to be received as optimistic, and she was taking it as a logical explanation. Which wasn't logical at all. Although, his words of compliment on her brilliance brought a bit of a flustered color to her cheeks.
"I don't really think..-"
"If you were to kill me I wouldn't mind. Even then I would think you were brilliant."
Siobhan stared for a long moment at the smoke curling up around the distant cigarette. What hollow words. That still and complacent face, the simple words that held so much weight on them. Her face never changed, but the fluster receded from her cheeks, a dullness taking its place. An admiration of that level could kill someone. She decided to not comment and turn to stare out the window. It is a nice day. Watching the hefty clouds drag themselves across a blue canvas didn't do much for her.
Siobhan was growing irritated. The longer the silence stretched on the more her inability to find a decent reply bugged her. She needed to say something to deter those words, but she herself was at loss. Warring emotions tossed her underneath the waves of two conflicting sides. How could anyone be so accepting of a potential or impending death? Why would you not want to fight that? Wouldn't you want to live? But yet, Siobhan could understand that. If there were ever anyone with a brilliance stronger than her own, dying by their hands would be a blessing. She didn't want to understand. Siobhan didn't want to care.

Shouyo wasn't any better really in taking his own advice. But it was true, he did believe it. Not just in the sense of finding one's path but also in any circumstance. Once route A is out of the equation just go through route b. There had to be an escape route from the escape route if that made any sense. Why jump into a water of piranhas when you can just walk around it? If there were wild dogs around that just find a different way through that one as well. Maybe the first route was just find but something force it to stay in its lane and not deter. In that case it should just continue to run straight.
Maybe it was just too simplistic in Shouyo's mind. His family life unlike some were pretty simple. A normal house of five, including himself. A good relationship with all his family members, all living under one roof in a pretty good neighborhood to boot. Good grades, good family. He ended up at PHS on his own accord, bad decisions he made while in school, making friends with the wrong people. He really wasn't a criminal at all, he couldn't ever understand Siobhan's circumstances. He could merely guess and make assumptions.
Her reply cut short but Shouyo didn't even seem to notice her responding at all he was kinda spacing out in between his own words. While smoking he merely drifted to his own thoughts before he could even realize how quiet it gotten. Shouyo realized his words could be off putting. Some, arrogant, kids might take it and shout things like 'yeah it should be an honor!' or some other nonsense but she was different. They had decent chemistry, why would in any circumstance would she kill him. Unless its for personal reasons, Shouyo had no real enemies.
".... well.... I think instead of a gun a piano is better suited for your hands. And I would probably rather be standing holding the gun for you instead of in front of it. I'm not all that good at shooting though."
Shouyo didn't really care much about life or death that much was true, but saying something like dying at this age seemed a bit morbid he thought. His character was depressing enough it was evident he would die but if he had to choose any circumstance of death he thought it would be nice to die by such hands, but at the same time how much nicer it would be to be behind the hands with her.

Siobhan told herself she couldn't bear to hear all of this. It hurt too much to listen to those words and not feel such immense guilt and despair. But the words soaked in and made themselves comfortable around the barbed wire of her heart. The whispers of a complement drifted in her ears and only resonated to make itself louder as it entered her mind. A piano is better suited for your hands. Siobhan didn't glance down at her hands, but she wanted to raise them into the still air of the music room. Were the ridges and soft pads meant to trickle along the keyboard, or were they meant to squeeze triggers and be stained with gunpowder?
Let me hold the gun for you. Siobhan looked up to the golden prince behind the princess. Here she was, buried in the bushes with dirt streaking her clothes and a tear-stained face. Her hands clutched the side of her head, trying to quiet the pressures and demands of her life. I'm not all that good at shooting though. Was that a declaration? A promise? Siobhan blinks away tears that slide from her chin and look up at him. Shock and surprise, and maybe a little bit of adoration.
"You don't... have to, do that..."
More tears. They well up and fall harder, and despite the princess's best attempts her wry grin crumples into more sobs. Head buried between her knees, this position is the only one she's found comfort in. Siobhan would like for someone to finally wrangle out the gun from her hands. It could only be too good to be true if her hands were able to find the chords of a piano in hard times instead of the butt of a gun. The princess is no longer hiding in the castle garden but is down deep in the dungeon where there is no light. There is no hope.

Shouyo was always ready. When the time came he was always ready to get his hands dirty for those who were close to him, those that valued him as a person. It was like that even before PHS. his best friend valued him as a companion and a strong subordinate. Recognizing his weaknesses but used them to bring out his strengths. Instead of seeing him as useless he dug deep and polished him into his right hand man. For a person to do such things Shouyo wasn't regretful for taking his fall and entering this hell gate. Sometimes hate did rise within him but not enough to cut all ties.
Siobhan, to him, was the closest person he met here that resembled his long friend. A person who would look through his mediocre personality and skills and see what's good inside. Just through notes in a piano she saw he was brilliant. And he thought the same with her. Someone who was brilliant and captivating could capture people and have them follow her to the ends of the world. For her that was probably displeasing, having people do her bidding, and yet Shouyo thought if it was someone like her, that wouldn't be so bad. He would follow her, even if the whole world went against her.
"I don't have to. But if I had to choose, I wouldn't mind."
He finally looked up to see Siobhan, who was so emotional this whole time. Shouyo's eyes widened. He didn't even realize what he was saying till now, what that could mean to her. Shouyo slowly crawled over to her, dropping the cigerette. He wasn't very good at comforting people, or say the right words even, considering that's how she got to this position, but instinctively Shouyo started to pat her head, and hum. Music was surely a better form of communication between the two then anything words could convey.
Clair de Lune. A famous piano piece by Debussy. A light calming tune, as if the moonlight was shining on them. Just the two in the midst of the darkness. But what Shouyo also thought of was Verlain's poem that inspired Debussy's piece. A poem by the same name. His voice was a little hoarse, probably from the smoking and yet it was still soft and soothing.

Siobhan realized that she was incredibly bitter. She didn't deserve someone so kind as Shouyo and it stung to accept. Her blackened self shriveled on itself retracting from Shouyo's concerned approach towards him. Don't be kind to me. Siobhan was not a good person, her actions were awful. If Shouyo knew of the reasons that had put her into this school, he wouldn't want to be so kind anymore. She was her father reborn into a seductress that craved power. Satisfaction wasn't in her nature. Absolutely no one should ever follow behind her. Siobhan would lead them all to their deaths.
She couldn't live with that. Couldn't live with herself. Even so, Shouyo's comforting hand on her head brought surprise for a number of times she had lost track of. The humming brought up emotions she couldn't place to a time or memory, but they were very real. Siobhan didn't like the wet trails on her cheek or the terrible noises she was making, but Shouyo's efforts were touching. No one had ever gone to lengths like this for her. Siobhan had no one to compare him to for no one had ever been this kind to her. So many faces, so many experiences in her short span of a life, and even so there was nothing that could hold a candle to Shouyo's kindness.
"You're.. too kind..."
It was all she could tell him through the rushing tears on her face. Why was she even still crying? Could it be the tune of the music bringing her into another dimension? The princess was no longer buried in the bushes of the castle garden, but standing in the middle of the moon's soft beams. Although the tears were still present, it wasn't so lonely with the prince by her side. Maybe that was the problem. Siobhan was so lonely it was too much to take in at Shouyo's immediate acceptance of her.
From the moment she had looked underneath the piano, it was as if her world expanded to make room for him. Siobhan couldn't let anything happen to him once she had him in her grasp. Even more than her fear of loneliness, she feared any harm befalling him. As more tears of gratitude and hesitance slipped from her chin, a soft humming to soothe her stroked her head, Siobhan felt herself bury the memories of Shouyo so far into herself she couldn't forget them. And then, she would make sure that he too would stay by her side. Whether she was princess or queen, it was her duty to protect the king. Siobhan didn't know if she would be able to withstand failure.

She only continue to shrivel back into her shell. Where was the lighthearted figure that woke him but earlier this afternoon. Where was the sparkling queen he followed out of the forest? It was like he assumed, she had more to herself than what he thought. Secrets that didn't want to be revealed to him, she couldn't. What would he understand, he never really dealt with anything. He was only part of a gang of teenagers, he never even grazed upon the true depths of the underworld. And yet he didn't fear it, the pain or the fear that derived from those parts. He could only guess she was part of that deep world he couldn't touch, yet he really felt no fear or hatred for her. We were all part of something worse.
Shouyo lifted her head up and wiped her tears from her face with the same handkerchief. He felt bad it was the same one he wiped her sweat with but it was the only thing he had on him. If he could stop the tears with the words of his music he could try to stop them literally. What a childish and brainless thought, but really, how else would he stop them? If he ever made a girl cry the girl would just runaway cursing at him, but she just continued to compliment him. Wasn't it his fault she was so sad? He laughed a little, this was the first time experiencing such things.
"I'm not that kind, if I was I wouldn't make you cry. Or my mother, or so many others. I've made enemies in my time too, I've done things too. Maybe not as bad as others. But how kind would I be.... if I ended up here."
He hadn't done the biggest of crimes but he has done things. Betrayed his families trust and joined a gang. Sold people out, and sold their information. Helped circulate light drugs. We all did things. That's why, he didn't think things like murder or petty crimes were that big of deal. Whatever she did, someone else has done em too, worse. So what was the point in getting bitter about one person. She looked like the type to be able to stand on her own. To have men beneath her heels as she stride forward in confidence, maybe she does now, maybe that's not what she wanted.
"We're all cruel tainted criminals here. Just because one persons murdered or the other has stolen things doesn't make one worse than the other. We're all in the same place now. We all share a the same jail cell."

Siobhan couldn't ignore his words, no matter how much the softer parts of her wished to ignore any dark sides to Shouyo. Both of them hadn't shown up at PHS #552 as some kind of merit award. Siobhan allowed Shouyo to wipe her tears away, the streaks slowly drying up. She was causing trouble for him, but instead of feeling guilty she felt grateful, albeit a bit of embarrassment. Shouyo didn't have a reason to be kind, especially to someone like Siobhan. I don't deserve this, but just for now, just once, I want to be a little selfish.
"I'll probably be in this jail cell forever... but that wouldn't be so bad... if you were here with me..."
Siobhan hadn't even bothered to ask Shouyo how he could feel about all of this. How could she have been so selfish? But she didn't feel bad. Rather, now that she had cried, it made her want to explain herself. Siobhan wanted Shouyo to know why these tears were of gratitude, not sadness. How could I be sad with someone like you around? She had been wrong about her first impression of Shouyo. He wasn't just some strangely luminescent boy she had encountered. It was the shine of the memories he had frozen within him that had attracted her. The chill of his presence calmed the raging fires around her until the crackles and roars turned into the sound of falling snowflakes. The princess could bask in that light forever.
"I think that you're kind because you're in a place like this. Even though everyone has their fair share, or more, of problems that put them in here, you still choose loyalty, don't you? Shouyo, I don't believe that you are evil by nature. Maybe your mother cried because she too saw how genuine you are. It would be terrible for that to be wasted. But when you tell me that it would be okay to die by my hands. That's just... so... sad..."

Siobhan seemed to be pretty cooperative when he wiped away her tears. Hopefully that meant she was calming down. Most people would slap his hand away and yell, be angry and embarrassed. He felt a little embarrassed about it all too. Who would of guessed of his entire life he would gently be wiping the tears from a girl's face. Back in the day he did make a lot of girls cry but they would all, of course, be super angry with him. He laughed at this unexpected point in his life but cut short by Siobhan's remark. He looked at her a little surprised. So she wasn't so mad. In fact she accepted him, someone like Shouyo next to her side. He couldn't find the right words but he did know one thing.
"If I were next to you, I wouldn't want you to be caged. I wouldn't want to be caged. A cell still has a door."
Shouyo leaned back, using his arms to balance him up. And took a long sigh. What a long day its been. It feels like the two of them have been in conversation for ages... but it hasn't even been a whole hour. Usually talking with such people irritated him but it wasn't so bad. Its as if each minute that passed felt like an hour, and yet even those elongated times felt too fast. There was something about this girl that made everything he disliked into a new light. He saw him differently too. All the words she spoke, the way she described him. He hadn't heard words like that in a long awhile. Words that were on his side. Was he really loyal? A word like that was meant for someone with guts, heart and confidence.
"my "loyalty" is what got me in here. But I guess, I still .... think its good. I guess. Its nice to be alone. But sometimes people are ok."
She was upset about dying for her. It did sound weird after all. Sounded like a middle school love confession. No one ever takes those words to heart. But of course in places like these where dying is a high possibility, where the underground world exists, those words actually carry a heavy heart.
"Well I guess... I shouldn't give you a reason to pull the trigger on me then..."
A small dry laugh ran through the last words.

Siobhan blinked and looked around the cage. There was a door... wasn't there? She had been so consumed in trapping herself in the cage that she hadn't even looked for a way out. She hadn't had any reason. But she wanted to protect Shouyo, and trapping him in a cage was no way to let anyone live. If Siobhan was trapped in a cage, she couldn't protect him. It was her duty now to make sure that she delivered him from this cage. Even if that meant taking a flying leap out of her comfort zone. That would be fine with her. As long as Siobhan was able to see Shouyo's surprised face when she shoved him out the doorway and into the sun, finally ending his eternal winter, she wouldn't mind taking his place in this cage.
That's right Shouyo. It is nice to be alone. Siobhan wondered if she missed those days of loneliness. Ever since coming to PHS #552, she had found herself swarmed by a number of people she felt a fierce desire to protect. It was so different from the usual isolation, she had found herself overwhelmed. People are nice sometimes, and I don't know why it has taken me this long to realize that. Siobhan closed her dry eyes, still feeling the light moisture on her skin from the rushing tears. So, it was loyalty to the few that had put him in a cage like this. How similar to her as well. The undying loyalty to the Arden line had put Siobhan in shackles and a very dark cell.
"Well I guess... I shouldn't give you a reason to pull the trigger on me then..."
Shouyo laughed. Siobhan pouted at the amusement he was getting out of this. How could he stake his life on her without a second thought? She felt exasperated, but somehow a little special. It was unusual for someone to give her value, but Shouyo had done just that without hesitation. Siobhan felt the need to reciprocate, but wasn't sure how. Words were failing her, but somehow she found a hesitant sentence building itself up in her mouth. Slowly, Siobhan replied to the reckless and precious person.
"Are you sure you're human? People don't.. make sacrifices like that.. Especially if it is someone like me. But if you're sure, then I don't think... it would be terrible.. for you to stay with me... please."

Even if there was a lock the cage could no longer either soul. The boy didn't want to leave, the girl didn't know she could. The door was open for him. But why step out? There was nothing for him outside. He could stretch his wings further but why do that? Spend the energy and time to do such a thing when everything he needed was there, he flew inside himself. So why go back on such a thing? But when he looked over at the girl she had the key with her the whole time. But she never bothered to use it. It was as if she was blind to it. He could tell she was stuck, her wings needed more room unlike his. Such wings were wasted there. So he shouted, hey get out the keys been with you the whole time.
The solitude he had inside was a nice one. There was once a time he was outside with the others. But because of those chains he was now here. He did it to himself. So maybe that's why he was okay with it. Buried and forgotten. The silence was calming the only company being himself. There was no one to disappoint anymore. But without knowing it he somehow grabbed the attention to of another, to come take him out.
"Human? Haha, If anything I'm a parasite."
Shouyo looked at her a little wide eyed. It was the first time she seemed to speak a little selfishly. It was sort of refreshing. It seemed as if this whole time she was pushing people away but now she seemed to be okay with Shouyo. Suddenly a came over Shouyo's mind. Ah he was about to get involved in another human relationship. He hated those things, how did he get here again? It was probably because of all those words he said. He brought it upon himself, he felt his grim laziness over coming but still he thought. If it was someone like her, it would be alright.
"I'll stay. But you'll be running faster then me. So It's okay to leave me anytime."
Shouyo raised his hand for a shake. Almost like to seal the deal. But really it was a new beginning for the both of them.
"Nice to meet you, I'm Shouyo Li. I hope to learn more about you."
