(OOC: This solo thread is written with both my IC character appearing as Luke and my personal npc 'real' Luna- both being their actual biological gender/appearances due to them both going out late at night (no need for them to swap places!))
By now, the usually bustling streets of New York were all but a whisper at this time of night- the wide distances between the passing people and the light chill in the air gave the illusion that time had stopped for the two blue-dye haired siblings. New York at night would probably give you the opposite impression, generally being a loud and ignorant place to the worries of its youth, but where they were headed the noise would simply fade into the distance. Luke cupped his hands and blew in them to warm them up before going back to hold his sister’s hand. He never really thought about it before because he was usually inside or out during the middle of the day, but with a skirt like his sister currently had on, he would begin to wonder how girls really managed to survive the cold winter days that were slowly creeping up on them. Luna noticed his brother’s glance and responded to it with a smile.
“Don’t you have a girlfriend yet? It’s been nearly a month.” She would jestingly stab at her brother before giving out a small laugh and leaning against him.
“I don’t think I’d want to go out with any of the crazy people from that hellhole- Anyway. It’s not like you have a boyfriend at your new school either!” He replied, returning the joking spite in her direction.
“Ooh. What if I said I did get a boyfriend?”
“I’d swap back with you for a day and beat him up.”
The two had stopped moving and were now in the middle of an intense stare-off. It took a few moments of the two siblings being like this before they both broke out into tears of laughter again. As far as siblings go, they were very close- they looked after each other in the past when nobody else would, and now finally being away from their tyrant father had made them even closer. It’s nice for us to take a day off like we used to do as children during summer breaks, Luke thought to himself with a smile as they finally made their way closer to their target destination.
The old building was even grander than either of them could have expected as they pushed the thick oak doors inwards and took their first steps into an incredibly well furnished and expansive granite-lined library. Fortunately, New York’s public library is always open for tourists and scholars alike, so the two of them arriving at midnight was perfectly fine. The temperature was considerably warmer in here than the outside due to improved heating implemented since the library’s initial creation, even though the vast space and stone floors would gave a different impression. As they closed the doors behind them, the clerk at the side desk would give them a smile to which they would respond with a nod. They knew to be quiet and try to avoid any 552 related problems (the hair dye and piercings would probably give it away). At this point, any further background noises from the city had now completely disappeared as if they had travelled into a different dimension in which all noise had been stripped from the core.
Luke and Luna slowly made their way through the main hall, desks and lamps tidily positioned either side of the centre walkway with no signs of being recklessly moved out of position. The ceiling had beautiful paintings of a peaceful pink sunrise through wispy white clouds, further enforcing the idea that they had been transported to somewhere entirely different to the New York they were beginning to understand.
They spent the following quarter of an hour simply wondering about and taking a look at how big the place really was, very simply to enjoy the nice peace and quiet for once, away from the madness of their new school lives in New York. Luke had managed to find a favourite of his as a child, ‘The Catcher in the Rye’, tattered from many reading sessions and even notes from previous readers littered throughout the spine as he flipped through the pages at a quick glance. Unfortunately they weren’t here for that though, or he would have loved to take the time to read through the entire thing again. No, they were here for the sake of his sister. Apparently the reading material at her new school was terrible- and there was no way Luke was going to let his twin go to 552’s library (even if his opinion of it was unusually good for finding study materials). The only option remaining was to come here actual published documents for her project and to find archived notes for her research. The only other alternative would be if Luke could get his sister a laptop and internet, although this option would unfortunately be too expensive until he could secure a job to pay their personal activities.
The non-fiction section at this library seemed to be even larger than the fiction side as they passed through the impressive granite archways that separated them. Luna had memorised the ordering system of books as they both arrived, so they would both head directly to the studies section for biology research and published comprehensions. The real Luna was considered a genius when it came to anything biology related (even as she delved so far into it that she was told to attend 552 under false claims of bio-terrorism). Luke would be the only one who knew it was more than simply being gifted as he was always there to observe his sister’s hard work and continually following in the path of something she was interested in.
Luke sighed. He knew he didn’t have anything that he was really into like Luna’s biology- no sports he liked or anything socially trending he was really into. It was a bittersweet feeling of accomplishing something whenever he helped out his sister like this though, so he felt like doing the best he could do for his sister was the one thing that made his life have significant meaning. -Even going as far to take her place as a student in a notoriously dangerous school to protect her would be no big problem to him.
“Ah, this book here is good Luke.” She would say before covering her mouth with her wrist, blanketed by a slightly oversized white hoodie sleeve. It was so quiet over this side of the library that she didn’t realize how loud normal speaking would be in comparison. She continued what she was saying in a whisper “It’s called the Blind Watchmaker. It’s Richard Dawkin’s argument and explanation about a universe created without design and-“ “-evolution though natural selection”. Luke finished her sentence with a smile. He was actually beginning to get pretty knowledgeable about the names and contents of the books his sister would be interested in, despite never having read any of them. “To dispel the idea that complexity cannot rise without the intervention of a creator!” He triumphantly quoted from the inside cover as if it held significant personal importance to him in some way. Luna put the book back before grabbing another one.
“I bet you don’t know about this one then!” She exclaimed in a mock shout, although still using her library whisper voice. She handed Luke a book with a muted-colour psychedelic landscape cover, the words ‘The Selfish Gene’ titling it in white. Yet another book by Richard Dawkin- another book that Luke had actually heard of from his sister before, although she probably forgot she mentioned it.
“Well, I’ve heard about this one before actually, but I don’t know what it’s about.” Luke would say as his sister put on a smug expression. “It’s about genetics and traits of people and things. It’s the sort of book that makes anyone who reads it feel like a genius, so you might find it interesting”.
Well, he kind of doubted it would shine any light on the information on spiritual or seemingly magic powers of people at 552 (of which he still hadn’t told Luna about yet), but he was slightly curious to see if it would help him further understand his friends as well as some of the other, slightly more crazy people at his new school. He laughed to himself at the idea that his sister and himself could both descend from such a terrible family, since as far as they knew, neither of them knew their mother and their father was a jerk. He wondered if the book would have an explanation for the fact him and his sister were both so different in terms of interests and intelligence, and yet they both got along so well.
She pulled another book off the shelf- ‘The Cosmic Serpent’, an anthropologist point of view on DNA by Jeremy Narby. This was one Luke hadn’t heard of before, and it was probably for that reason his sister decided on this book for her report, since it was one she probably hadn’t read it either. He knew it was going to be a long night as his sister grabbed his sleeve and cheerily dragged him back to the main hall before they sat next to each other on one of the corner tables.
As his sister began to setup her notebook and setup the desk space to her preferences, Luke would begin to flick past the opening pages and delve right into the chapter that interested him the most (since he had no choice in book, apparently, while he was here). Chapter 6: Gensemanship
As he began reading, ignoring the sound of scribbles coming from the ink pen on his right side, he would begin to get much more interested in it than expected. The book was almost read as if it were intended to be a fiction book, and left a lot of interpretation to the reader- at least until it got a bit technical by referring to G, H and F, and giving them values and changing them dependant on new values. If you had 100 brothers and sisters, approximately 50 of them would contain any particular rare gene that you contain. It also means that if you have 100 rare genes, approximately 50 of them are in the body of any one of your brothers or sisters. The book (thankfully) summarised for him. A similar method was also used to show how it was between any family member such as parent and child so he really felt he hit the mark with picking a random chapter to read.
As it got later and he delved further into the book, occasionally whispered jokes and comments about their books between the two siblings passing, he began to think about how he could use this information. He wasn’t as thoughtful as his sister to do something practical with it, but maybe he could use it to understand his relatives and friends (as well as his enemies) a bit better. After all, maybe this is the sort of thing that would be important in figuring out what Riot really wants if he ever tried to backtrack.
Luke lifted the left sleeve of his sister to take a look at her watch (the one he normally wears, but felt they needed a swap so people wouldn’t notice if either of them met someone they knew. It probably wasn’t a big deal though, since they were both busy reading.
“We should probably head back now”, Luke said with a small gap in his speech before instinctually continuing as his sister could stop writing. “5am”. He didn’t really say it because it was late, but rather his sister’s handwriting was getting incredibly messy and she must be tired. She definitely didn’t have the gene that he had for being able to stay awake with energy to spare. “Hmmmm fine.” Luna would respond sleepily, folding the corner of the book to imply she was going to come back and finish the rest of it sometime.
(Wis stats pref, otherwise anything else would be nice <3. Next time I'll try to remember to pick a more interesting ah topic. Non-OOC word total is 2007).
