Salutations,
The first public staff meeting will be held via Skype on January 2nd at 10am CST and 6pm CST. Notice that there will be two meetings that day, the second one being the same thing with a recap of first meeting and an opportunity for those who can’t make the first meeting to still attend.
This meeting is one of many steps we are taking to remind you that you do have a voice on this site and to give you an opportunity to use that voice. Don’t want to talk, just want to listen? Totally fine! We want you to at least hear what is being discussed and get a feel for where things are going and the things we discuss. Have a lot to say? Even better! We want to hear what you have to say!
For those who cannot attend, don’t worry. We will be recording minutes throughout the meeting to send to everyone so that the whole community can stay up to date.
Below are a few guidelines for the meeting designed to make the process manageable and enjoyable for everyone.
The rules are simple:
1. The “one person talking" rule. This basically means that if one person is talking, it is absolutely unacceptable for anyone else to be talking until they are finished and a staff member has called on the next person.
To help avoid people talking over one another, if anyone other than staff needs to speak, please type “raises hand” or “hand” in Skype and we will call on you. This is to make the meeting as productive and civil as possible. This part will happen once the staff discussion on a topic is concluded and the topic becomes open for community questions and discussion.
Obviously, the staff will need to discuss questions or topics together so they are naturally exempt from this rule during staff discussions, but we will do our best to make sure only one of us is talking at any one time to avoid people not being able to understand us (because why have a meeting otherwise?).
2. No douchebaggery- this one is pretty straightforward. This meeting is to facilitate dialogue between the staff and members of the board in a constructive, civil and hopefully productive discussion. Any participants (including staff) who cannot handle and abide this rule will be warned only once then kicked from the group if further incursions are made.
Note- There is a difference between being passionate about something and being disrespectful. The best way to avoid being disrespectful is to make sure you think before you speak and avoid insulting people.
3. Format- The following is how the meeting will work: A speaker will introduce each topic and present it. They will then turn it to the staff for questions and discussion. Then, the community will have a chance to ask questions and discuss with staff about the topic being discussed. Once all questions and discussions are concluded, we will move on to the next topic.
Think of this as a staff meeting with group participation or a city council meeting. We want you to be a part of this meeting and quite possibly meetings in the future so that you can have some insight into what we’re discussing and how we work. This is just one part of how we are doing our best to make sure you know we are working for you and site. This is also to give you the chance to participate and potentially affect change on the site.
If you would like to attend, please send me or any of the staff the email you use in Skype or your Skype name so that we can add you to the call. Also please indicate which meeting you would like to attend.
We look forward to seeing you there!
