Oswald “Ozzie” Owens
Alias: That Blonde Bastard
Age: 16
Grade: Sophomore
Height: 5’8”
Weight: 160
Eye Color: Light Blue
Hair Color: Dirty Blonde
Appearance: A lithe, sinewy young man of average height but with an exceptionally athletic and defined build, similar in appearance to a lightweight MMA brawler on fight night. Quite handsome, with olive tanned skin and sharp facial features, he could easily model as a part-time job. Often smiling or grinning, he has a look that has been described by friends as mischievous and by enemies as extremely punchable. He sports a handful of tattoos, most noticeably the tribal design on his right upper arm and script on his left hip. He has no identifiable scars.
Personality: The ABCs of Ozzie…
Arrogant. Brash. Cocky. Deceptive. Engaging. Facetious. Galvanizing. Hedonistic. Impulsive. Jocular. Keen. Lucky. Manipulative. Nonchalant. Outgoing. Proud. Quick-witted. Rebellious. Sly. Truculent. Upbeat. Vain. Wily. Xenodochial. Youthful. Zealous.
Fighting Style: Has no formal training in martial art, but has spent enough time around experienced fighters – and getting into fights himself – to have learned what is effective and what isn’t for a street fight. He is largely a kickboxer, prefering to stay on the move and attack with sharp, tight punches and kicks designed to pick the opponent apart. While competent in grappling and ground fighting, he prefers to remain standing where his smaller frame won’t be overwhelmed by the size of a large enemy struggling on top of him. In the words of Ali, “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee, and mock the other guy enough to force him into a mistake.”
Strengths: Exceptional control of striking attacks with great accuracy. Fairly mobile and light on his feet, slippery and hard to corner. Surprisingly tough hide when needed, able to withstand many powerful blows, even from more physically imposing fighters. Intelligent and quick witted, can use his sharp tongue to aggravate and lure his opponent into more favorable positions. Good with a baseball bat too.
Weaknesses: As an average size man with a slim frame, his raw strength and general power behind his hits is lacking compared to others. Has no formal training (and still relatively young) which leaves him at a disadvantage against more practiced or experienced opponents. He is at a definite disadvantage if brought to the ground or forced to lock-up with a trained grappler, knowing only basic positioning and escape movements.
History
Tiger Father Begets Tiger Son
Oswald Owens, known since birth by the nickname Ozzie, was born in San Francisco as the only child of parents Griffith and Maggie Owens. At the time of his birth Ozzie's father, known better by the name Griff, was a semi-successful mixed martial arts fighter in California's burgeoning MMA scene. Griff was a local favorite, known for ugly brawling in the ring and always giving an entertaining fight, even if he only managed to win about half of his infamous wars. Maggie was the daughter of a small-time bookie based out of Las Vegas and a fierce intellect who absorbed everything her father showed her about the underworld of sports betting and match fixing.
It would ultimately be this combination of fighting and fixing that would be the downfall of Griff and Maggie and, by extension, Ozzie.
Growing up in the lower-middle class sections of the East Bay area, Ozzie spent his free time hanging around the gym his father trained at, The Tiger's Den. Surrounded by the sweat, blood, and bravado of early generation MMA fighters, the boy quickly gained a reputation for being a trash talker and a fast learner, mimicking the moves of the brawlers and often getting into trouble at school for testing out his new punches and kicks on unsuspecting classmates. Griff however was not fazed by his son's antics and all but encouraged this rough tutelage.
If Griff was the brawn of Ozzie's upbringing, Maggie was certainly the brains. Taking the young boy along with her on frequent trips to visit her father in Las Vegas, Ozzie was a quick study on the many scams and schemes used by his grandfather in the betting world. Horse races, football games, if it was a sport, the old man had a way to skew the odds in his favor. And some of his favorite sports to fix was boxing and MMA. The fact his daughter married a fighter was nothing but a happy coincidence, right?
This was the state of things as Ozzie entered 8th grade of elementary school. By this point his father's 'competitive' career was nearing an end and he was looking for a way to continue providing for his family. Taking advice from his father-in-law, Griff began convincing his fellow fighters to take dives and throw their matches in exchange for a cut of the inflated odds, Griff of course taking a his percentage along the way. Spending less time fighting now and more time managing and coercing fighters, Griff was making more money than he ever did inside the ring.
Ozzie followed his family's example well, creating betting rings inside his school for his classmates. Betting on the results of tests, basketball games, anything Ozzie could convince the others to take a chance on. For him though none of it was a chance, as he took proper 'precautions'. It was during his middle school times that Ozzie first came under the scrutiny of the law, being picked up on several occasions for gambling and fighting in the alleys around school, usually in that order. The run-ins with police were never quite enough to send him to juvenile detention but they did get him on the police's radar from an early age.
It was during Ozzie's freshman year of high school that his world shattered. The event: an Ultimate Fighting pay-per-view in their hometown of San Francisco. Smelling the potential for a huge score, Ozzie's parents and grandfather set in motion plans to fix their biggest match yet. Using his access to fighters, Griff pressured the odds-on favorite from the under card to throw his fight just enough to lose by points in a decision. At the last minute though his opponent was forced out from an accidental injury, leaving the scheme with a fixed fighter but no opponent. Desperate to complete things and not lose months of planning and money, Maggie's father convinced Griff to become the fight's replacement. Griff expected to win the fight by points as originally laid out, but unbeknownst to him, Maggie and her father had set up something else.
The night of the fight, Griff came out swinging hard, trying to make things look as natural as possible. But instead of defending, the fixed fighter struggled to block even the most telegraphed of attacks. Griff realized too late what was happening and tagged the other man with a wild roundhouse, destroying his face and knocking him out cold.
Not just out cold...dead.
It was quickly determined that the dead man had been drugged and was in no position to fight. Unfortunately for Griff, planted evidence implicated him as the poisoner and he was arrested on charges of second-degree murder. He tried to offer an alibi but the trail of evidence indicated him as the ringleader of the killing. On top of this, Maggie and her father disappeared after the fight, throwing Griff under the bus. It was during the trial that Griff finally realized he'd been framed by his wife and father-in-law, forced to take the fall while they escaped any culpability. Bitter and resigned to his fate, Griff was sentenced to 15 years with no parole.
Ozzie knew the truth about his father's crime but had no power to change the outcome. His mother gone and his father sent to prison, Ozzie became a ward of the state. He began to act out even more heavily than before, getting into dozens of fights and altercations each month. He stole from the foster families he was placed with and was nabbed for truancy on multiple occasions. Everything came to a head the summer before his sophomore year when, in a fit of rage over not being paid for a winning bet, he beat a another teen so severely that the boy was left unconscious in the hospital for a week.
Seeing no other alternative, Ozzie was sent to PHS #552...
