A lunch box is seen last Friday, around 12:37:08pm with an encouraging note packed inside. This appalling display that utterly lacked manliness has left many students stunned and outrage, as some decided, after a long while, to speak out against it.

'Gimme your lunch money, kid.' Miri struggled, her toes barely brushing the floor as she was held against the lockers, a strong hand grabbing a fistful of her collar. She opened her hand, a dollar and change dropping onto the floor at the boy's feet. He made a sort of laughing-grunt sound and let her go, scooping up the money and disappearing down the hallway toward the cafeteria.
This was the third time this had happened. In a row.
Miri picked herself up, dusting off and smoothing her clothing; A short ruffled dress, a small vest, striped leggings and arm warmers. The arm warmers fell over her hands, covering everything except the very tips of her fingers. She frowned, picking up her bag and walking to the cafeteria, sticking to the edge of the room and finding a table against the wall. She dropped her bag and climbed onto the table, sitting with one leg out, one leg bent, and her back against the wall.
'If someone pushes you, you push back.' The girl had said on her first day. Miri understood the concept, but what she didn't understand was how.

"What is this, middle school?"
"Dammit! I said give me your lunch money!"
He launched a fist at me. It moved atrociously slowly. Completely obvious in movement. A right hook aimed at my left cheek to be exact. My eyes locked onto the fist as it approached me. I thought for a second, maybe the fist wasn't slow? Maybe I was just used to fighting faster people. Or maybe I was just faster. Maybe I had reached that lev-
"Grahhh!"
The fist hit my face. I turned my cheek with the punch and moved backwards slightly, allowing him to feel the contact but minimizing the damage on my behalf. Keeping in motion with the punch, I would be "thrown" off of my feet and onto the ground. When I hit the ground, the gentleman that I was conversing with would rummage through my pocket, grabbing my wallet. He took the money out, a fairly hefty amount by the look in his eyes. I personally forgot how much money I even had in my wallet. It could have been five dollars, or five hundred dollars for all that it mattered to me. He threw the wallet back onto me and walked away.
"Rich kids. Thinking they can be badasses at 552."
The kid walked off laughing, counting his earnings. Meanwhile, I was left on my ass. I sat up slightly, rubbing my cheek as if I was in a lot of pain. It was a pretty shitty punch. I barely felt it. The kid wasn't strong as well as not being fast. I had to keep up the act though. Shugo Yuy was supposed to be a shitty fighter after all. He's supposed to be the one that runs away, jokes around, and gets his ass kicked. Funny, I just didn't feel like joking around much these days.

Miri watched as the buddy of the bully who got her earlier beat up another kid and took his money. It looked like his loss was significantly greater than Miri's had been, and the two thugs fist bumped each other while they went off looking for their next victim. How was it these people always seemed to travel in packs? Were they some sort of nomadic culture of meanness?
She sighed, sliding off the table and reaching for her bag, pulling two apples out and hold one out to the boy as he climbed to his feet. His words caused the girl to quirk an eyebrow.
"Here. They did the same thing to me." Everyone shared to a certain degree in caravan village. No one went hungry, and if someone stole, they settled it within the group, almost never involving the outside authorities. These kids would have been sentenced to cleaning the animal cages for a week for stealing like that.

"I'm sorry to hear that."
I slowly rose back up to my feet, pulling my left arm across my chest for my hand to hold my right shoulder as I stretched it. I looked over at the girl who walked up to me. She offered an apple. It was a simple gesture. It looked like she felt some sort of kinsmenship with me since we both got robbed by the same people. Fruit wasn't exactly my thing. I usually didn't eat healthy. I scratched the back of my head as I took the apple from her, not wanting to offend her.
"Thanks."
I took a bite into the apple, feeling a little guilty that I took it from her. Most of the people at 552 weren't people of means. Her money getting taken was probably a bigger hit to her than my money getting taken. I was probably over thinking things... but despite that, the small gesture of the apple hit me pretty hard. I guess it was the pick me up I needed, knowing that some good was still in 552. That guy in the hockey mask told me that 552... the people I was protecting were going to bleed me dry. I was content with letting that happen.
"Come with me for a second."
I reached out to the girl's free hand and grabbed it. I didn't realize it, but I was smiling a bit. Despite the smile, my eyes didn't really show the same happiness. They looked almost dead inside. I was getting tired. All of the self sacrificing. It was wearing on me, but this was different. This was repaying the debt.
"I'm Shugo Yuy. And I know somewhere else to go get some food."

Miri's clothes were somewhat frayed around the edges, not rags but not fresh from the mall. Losing her lunch money meant she wouldn't eat today until she got home to Coney Island. Most of the vendors were family friends and would give her free food. Not the healthiest, but there were some options. The apples had been from the candy apple stand, Ted the owner was best friends with her father.
She blinked when Shugo took her hand, her cheeks flushing slightly at the contact. It wasn't that she wasn't used to contact with another person, but he was as good as a stranger to her. "Shugo." She repeated, committing his name to memory. "I'm Mireli." His smile seemed kind, but she could tell his eyes didn't sparkle like others did when they smiled at her. Her own expression was that of surprise, but an open naivety that was unusual for PHS 552. It was clear that she was new and not born and raised in this environment.

I looked back at the girl as she repeated my name. Noticing the redness on her cheeks, I couldn't help but wonder if she was maybe sick or something? Taking her outside probably wasn't the best idea. But since when was I good at ideas? I continued onward, leading her through the students in the hallway. I held my shoulder out, eating the apple as I moved through them.
"What kind of food do you like?"
I spoke with a bit of apple still in my mouth. I swallowed it down and let go of her hand as we made it outside. I felt the wind hitting me decently hard and decided to look behind me at Mireli to make sure she wasn't too cold.
"You alright with the weather?"

Most (normal) students would have felt a pang of guilt just leaving the school like this, but Miri had been homeschooled all of her life up to this year, so the rules hadn't had a chance to sink their claws into the small girl. Instead, another question surfaced, 'Do I trust him?'
The answer, strangely, was Yes. He seemed trustworthy enough, and Miri usually trusted someone until they gave her a reason not to. So here she was, following the boy out of the school.
"I like..." She wasn't sure how to answer the question. She'd eaten everything from the fried and sugared sweets of the carnival to the flat bread and stews cooked over the fires in caravan village. She liked it all. "Anything." She had dropped her apple back in her bag as they weaved between the students, not trusting herself to eat and walk at the same time lest she fall on her face.
The wind hit them as they stepped outside, and she recoiled slightly, wrapping her arms around herself as her body adjusted to the loss of heat. At his question, she nodded, taking a couple more steps out toward him and their mystery adventure.

She pulled back as we got outside. Despite her nodding, I could tell that she was cold. I pulled off the black canvas jacket I wore, and held it out to her. Underneath it, I still had on a long sleeved black henley. It wasn't decently warm so I wouldn't be too bad off I figured. Little did I know... I just jinxed myself. I thought about taking the car and driving, or just walking. Finding parking was always a pain, and I wasn't the best at parallel parking. Plus people tended to act strangely when they saw the kind of cars I drive.
"You up for a little bit of a walk? I know a good pizza place about five minutes away."
Five minutes away, it was probably already five minutes into lunch, five minutes back, that's a good 15 minutes right there. That was already half the time that lunch was. We were probably going to be late. Now I for one, didn't really care. I went to class to keep up appearances. I turned my head back to Mir to speak to her.
"We'll probably be late getting back to class. Are you okay with that?"

Miri accepted the jacket thankfully, dipping her arms into the sleeves and shrugging it on. It was big on her, the cuffs falling over her hands. "Thank you." She said, her voice carrying on the wind to sound smaller than it actually was. She nodded again to his proposal, lips tugging upward in a small smile.
"Pizza is good." Five minutes was nothing for Miri, you couldn't even get from one side of the carnival to the other in five minutes. Not to mention the times she'd had to walk home from school when she missed the bus (or the bus never came). Hours of walking versus a scant few minutes, she was alright with it. Another nod at being late, her next class was gym, and she always got picked on and shoved in that class. It wouldn't pain her to miss part or all of it.
She would follow him out of the parking lot toward this pizza place, she imagined she could smell it already. Her stomach growled faintly in anticipation.

"Well that's good to hear."
I walked down the path to the sidewalk. Motioning towards the right, I stepped out towards it. Mir looked pretty thankful to have my jacket. It was good to see.... ESPECIALLY CAUSE IT WAS FUCKING COLD AS FUCK. GOD DAMMIT YUY, STOP TRYING TO BE SO NICE. IT ALWAYS FUCKING SCREWS YOU OVER. My mind trailed off for a second... I lost the fight against the guy with the mask because I let him get back up instead of kicking him while he was down. I've gotten injured plenty of times because I didn't go all out on enemies. Was I some kind of masochist?"
Snapping out of my inner thoughts, I realized this was a pretty boring quiet walk. This girl was probably regretting letting me kidnap her running away with me. I turned down towards her with the same smile as before. My lips curled into a smile, my eyes still not giving the shine that most people did when they smiled. Still a little empty.
"So, what grade are you in Mir?"

Mireli trotted along obediently beside him, wrapped up in his jacket for warmth. It was extra warm because it was so big on her, and from him having warm it up in the first place. The wind bit at her cheeks and nose though, giving them a faint rosy color. She started to fall behind a bit in his strides, so she skipped to catch up.
"I'm in the second year." What was it called again? It had a funny name. "Soft-more." SHe said, unaware that she had mispronounced the name. When she was homeschooled, she didn't have a 'grade.' There were a lot of things about the traditional school structure that evaded Miri's understanding. Students were separated by 'classes' and 'years' and some learned different things than others. It was truly bizarre.
"And yourself?" She couldn't tell how old the boy was, or whether or not he was of the 'soft-more' class as well. He could be part of the 'chicken neck' class for all it registered to Miri's understanding.

I stopped in my steps for a moment and looked her dead in the eyes. My own eyes narrowed as they met hers. I read her for a second... realizing she was serious.
"...HAHAHAHAHA!"
I raised a hand onto my stomach to hold it slightly as I laughed. This girl... softmore? Really? Oh god.. I rubbed the back of my head sheepishly realizing I was probably an ass by laughing at her. I would open my mouth to speak to the girl, this time smiling with my lips and my eyes.
"I'm so sorry for laughing. I'm a Third Year. A Junior. And uhh.. we're here."
I would turn towards the storefront that we stopped in front of. The sign on top said, "Tony's Pizzeria and Restaurant." Taking a few steps forward, I would open the door and motion for Mireli to go in first. After she entered, I would rub my arms slightly glad to be out of the cold. My hands were ice cold. I would attempt to warm them by rubbing them against each other. My eyes would look up at the large menu that they had above the counter. I would give a slight wave to the people behind the counter before turning to Mireli.
"That's most of their stuff. They have some other stuff in a paper menu if you want."

Mireli's eyes widened at the sharp, booming sound of his laugh in the winter ait, the kind that came from the base of your soul, what her father called a 'full belly laugh.' While some people would have looked offended at being laughed at, the entire thing went over Miri's head and she simply looked confused.
"What's funny?" She asked him curiously as they stepped into the pizza place. It was fairly small but not too crowded, though there was clearly a lunch rush. Some businessmen from down the street, a couple moms and young kids, and a handful of college age students taking up the tables near the windows. Their books mixed with their pizzas, grease dripping across the Pythagorean theorem before class.
Miri looked over the menu, reading the different toppings one could have on their pizza. "What is...Hawaiian pizza?"? She asked, wrinkling her nose in confusion. Wasn't Hawaii a state? Was it the national pizza of Hawaii?

"I'm sorry. You were just cute the way you pronounced sophomore."
I'd speak on our way into the pizza restaurant. I was speaking with that smile again. The genuine one for once. I didn't even realize I was doing it. I looked through the menu but I knew what I wanted. Looking down at Mireli, I realized she was slightly puzzled by the expression on her face.
"Hawaiian Pizza? It's uhh. It's pizza with ham and pineapples on it."
I wasn't big on Hawaiian pizza. I usually had a slice of buffalo chicken or chicken Parmesan pizza. Yeah I guess I was a little boring when it came to my pizza choices. After taking one last look up at the menu, I'd look down at Mireli.
"You all set?"

"Sophomore." Miri repeated, using the pronunciation that Shugo used. She smiled mildly, realizing the humor in how she had used a hard T sound in the middle of the word. At least he hadn't teased her about it, his expression was much more kind. "I was homeschooled until now, so I'm not familiar with some of your terms."
She wrinkled her nose at his explanation of Hawaiian pizza. "Do they eat that it in Hawaii?" She asked curiously, unsure how a combination like that became popular. "I think so. I like the idea of the veggie pizza, may I have some of that?" She asked, trying to be polite. He has offered to buy her pizza, but she still felt the need to ask.
